It came as a bit of a shock that Superstore was able to weave such an incredible love story into the show. A comedy about a big box store ended up becoming the tale of how Amy and Jonah met and fell in love with each other. Most couples in sitcoms serve as a secondary plotline, but Superstore did things in reverse.

Amy and Jonah are level-headed people who are constantly surrounded by their co-workers and their chaos. They’re the heart of the show and the biggest pillar of the plot. Superstore cares about all of its characters, but there are plenty of episodes that highlight the importance of Amy and Jonah’s relationship.

10 “Pilot” (Season 1 Episode 1)

It was clear from the first episode that Jonah and Amy would be the main love story of the series. Amy finds her new co-worker annoying, but Jonah falls for Amy at first sight. He spends the episode following her around and trying to understand why she’s so pessimistic. Amy reveals how every day feels the same to her, so Jonah covers the entire ceiling with the glow stars she was stocking.

The fan-favorite quote “moment of beauty” comes from this scene, and when Amy and Jonah say goodbye in the parking lot, there are serious sparks between them. However, when Amy puts on her wedding ring, it becomes clear that it’s going to be a long journey. The pilot is one of the most monumental Simmosa episodes in the series, as it marks the day Jonah came into Amy’s life and began to change it.

9 “Cheyenne’s Wedding” (Season 2 Episode 20)

The first time viewers met Adam in Superstore, it was clear that he wasn’t a good husband to Amy. The guests at Cheyenne’s wedding comment on how close Jonah and Amy are, and Jonah becomes worried that Adam will pick up on his crush. Jonah spends the entire wedding awkwardly trying to downplay their relationship, but when Amy tells him her marriage is ending, he consols her.

Jonah puts all the things he loves about Amy into words, including her flaws. But things get awkward when Jonah accidentally lets the word “sexy” slip out. It was difficult not to cringe and get second-hand embarrassment, but the scene set the events of the next episode into motion. Additionally, Jonah’s speech helped viewers see Amy through his eyes.

8 “Tornado” (Season 2 Episode 21)

Jonah spends the entirety of the episode trying to incorporate the word “sexy” into his sentences, to downplay what he had accidentally said to Amy the night before. When a tornado hits the store, Jonah saves Amy from a shelf that could have crushed her. She kisses Jonah as the tornado rages around them, and when they pull away the storm begins to slow.

Jonah and Amy share a moment outside afterward, and despite almost getting killed, there’s happiness behind Jonah’s eyes. The shift in his demeanor when Amy runs to her husband, not only broke viewers heart but emphasized just how deep Jonah’s feelings for her run. Their kiss comes back into play later on in the show and ends up being a crucial part of how they finally get together.

7 “Video Game Release” (Season 3 Episode 13)

Amy denied her feelings for Jonah for years, even though they were obvious to everyone but the two of them. During their shift, Jonah and Amy find a storage room full of recalled toys and spend the day playing games with each other.

They always have fun when they’re together, but there was something about this experience that made Amy see Jonah in an entirely new light. It took quite a while, but Amy finally realizes that she likes Jonah. There’s no telling where the characters would be without this moment of clarity.

6 “Amnesty” (Season 3 Episode 15)

In one of the show’s most iconic scenes, Amy admits that she used to have a crush on Jonah after the employees see a video of them kissing during the tornado. Jonah is so perplexed by Amy’s confession that he stutters through his sentences and forgets his girlfriend’s name.

“Amnesty” changed everything for Amy and Jonah. For the first time ever, they, as well as the employees, knew without a doubt how they felt about each other. It was complicated for Jonah because of his relationship with Kelly, and he tries to convince her that he’s moved on from Amy. But it was an obvious lie, and it was only a matter of time before it would break them up.

5 “Lottery” (Season 3 Episode 19)

When Glenn tells Amy that she needs to request a raise from the district manager, Jonah encourages her to talk to Laurie. He accompanies Amy to a golf course and they seek Laurie out, hoping to show initiative. Things take a turn when Amy accidentally hits Laurie with a golf cart, and her raise is denied.

Amy and Jonah stay at the course drinking beers and laughing, and Jonah teaches Amy how to golf. The song Heartbeats by José González plays in the background, creating one of the most magical moments in the show. It added to the sitcom’s rom-com vibe, and while there are plenty of funny aspects about Amy and Jonah’s relationship, “Lottery” is proof that their connection is real and deep.

4 “Gender Reveal” (Season 3 Episode 20)

There weren’t many scenes between Amy and Jonah in “Gender Reveal” but the few they had were significant. After Amy discovers that she’s pregnant by her ex-husband, Dina inspires her to go and do what she wants to do most. Amy returns to the story and kisses Jonah before pulling away and telling him she’s pregnant.

The kiss is phenomenal, and the tenderness reveals that whatever’s between them isn’t just physical. It’s soft, sweet, and Jonah’s final push to break up with Kelly. Most slow burns prove to be worth the wait, and Simmosa is no exception.

3 “Town Hall” (Season 3 Episode 22)

After years of will they/won’t they, Amy and Jonah finally give in to their feelings in the Season 3 finale. Everything seems to be going great until one of the cameras in the photo lab goes online. The camera live streams to Cloud 9s all over the world and shoppers in other countries are bombarded with Amy and Jonah’s sex tape.

It was the show’s best cliffhanger, and also what viewers have been waiting for years for (minus the public sex tape element). It marked the beginning of the next chapter of Amy and Jonah’s love story, and there was no going back once they were honest about what they wanted.

2 “Lovebirds” (Season 4 Episode 13)

After revealing their relationship status to their co-workers, Amy and Jonah spend their first Valentine’s Day as a couple. When Garrett accidentally lets Dina’s birds out and Jonah tries to cover for him, it leads to a fight between him and Amy.

In the middle of the fight, they both end up saying, or rather, yelling “I love you,” for the first time. It’s a huge moment in any relationship, and the way it came out felt in character for both of them. Jonah’s so ecstatic that he tells Garrett about their confession, even though Garrett’s busy drowning in his own guilt.

1 “Perfect Store & All Sales Final” (Season 6 Episodes 14 & 15)

The two-part series finale of Superstore involved the return of America Ferrera, who had departed the show earlier in the season. Jonah and Amy broke up when she left to take a corporate job in California, but she returns when Cloud 9 is being shut down. There’s some tension at first, but Jonah begins to warm up to her as the episode goes on.

Amy moves back to St. Louis after a short time jump, and after a heartwarming speech from Amy, Jonah kisses her. At the end of the episode, a flash-forward shows a married Amy and Jonah, tucking in their kids under a ceiling covered in glow stars. The series finale is Jonah and Amy’s happily ever after, and viewers can rest easy with the knowledge that Amy and Jonah are together for life.
