Superstore Theory Why One Regular Character Suddenly Disappeared

For six seasons, Superstore gave viewers a look at the lives of people working inside big-box megastores. These places offer a variety of services for their customers, which often include pharmacies. On Superstore, the pharmacy was run by Tate Staskiewicz. Over the first two seasons, he became a prominent recurring character until he suddenly disappeared in Season 3 — and Amy might have been the reason why.

Not much is known about Tate other than his profession. He was rarely shown outside of the Cloud 9 location Superstore was based out of. But his personality was apparent. The man was shockingly arrogant, often appearing to believe that pharmacists were the greatest beings on Earth.

On top of that, Tate conducted himself as a borderline criminal. In Season 3, Episode 6, Mateo was quite sick but couldn’t afford health care because of Cloud 9’s low wages. He went to Tate for help, and he sold him antibiotics under the table. But when Mateo first showed up, Tate assumed he was just trying to get high and obviously had an established system for selling drugs to staff.

Later in Season 3, Tate mysteriously disappeared from Superstore with no explanation. It took some time for fans to realize that he was gone. Tate was a recurring character who had been in nine episodes. And there were long gaps between appearances, so it wasn’t odd to not see him for a while.

Tate’s exit likely has a lot to do with what went down during his final appearance. Season 3, Episode 12, saw Tate on a date with Amy Sosa, Superstore’s main protagonist and floor supervisor. She had recently gotten divorced and found herself finally in a place where she was ready to start dating again. While Tate might have been a bit of a jerk, he was also exceptionally handsome. As such, he and Amy ended up drunkenly making out.

What Amy didn’t expect was how quickly Tate would catch feelings. The next day, he was all in on a relationship that only existed in his mind. This was a “hit it and quit it” situation for Amy, which utterly devastated Tate when he found out. The whole situation boiled over, ending with a public confrontation between Tate, Amy and Marcus.

Tate’s bruised ego was likely the cause of his departure from the series. Fans didn’t know this at the time, but Season 3, Episode 12, was Tate’s last Superstore appearance. He never popped up again and was only mentioned once when Amy realized she was pregnant in Season 3, Episode 20. The only in-show explanation for him suddenly being gone is that his fragile ego was so damaged by the whole Amy situation that he left his job behind. It is, at best, a theory. However, it fits with Tate’s character as he was totally motivated by his image.
