Ted Lasso Season 3 Filming Begins Valentines Day 2022

Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham has confirmed that season 3 of the series will begin filming this Valentine’s Day. Ted Lasso is the first big hit for Apple TV+, winning an impressive seven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, for its inaugural season. Series creator Bill Lawrence has stated that Ted Lasso season 3 may be the last for the acclaimed series, citing scheduling conflicts with series star Jason Sudeikis.

Inspired by a series of ads for NBC Sports, Ted Lasso follows the titular character, an American football coach, who is brought in to coach an English mid-tier soccer team. Despite not knowing anything about the sport, and being faced with extreme pressure from management and fans, Lasso uses his upbeat demeanor and warm personality to help his team overcome impossible odds. Ted Lasso is noteworthy for its optimistic tone and positive messages, inspiring many fans with its charm.

Waddingham, in an interview on The Late Late Show With James Cordon, reveals Ted Lasso season 3 will begin filming on February 14, 2022, Valentine’s Day, calling it “rather lovely.” She also talks about winning an Emmy for the series along with her costars Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein. She also mentions the fast pace of filming on Ted Lasso, with rewrites and improvisation frequently taking place on the set. Read her full quote below:

“We start on Valentine’s Day, which is rather lovely. But I think because Jason is from SNL and Brendan [Hunt], who plays Coach Beard, is from Second City, which is in Chicago… and because Brett does stand-up, they write like the framework of the show, and then, the amount of times, and me with kind of like lots of emotional monologues, I will suddenly get completely different words just before the camera’s about to go on me… And at first, I was just like, you can’t do this to me, and Jason was just like, you’re absolutely fine. I think they like doing it because you get the immediate knee-jerk reaction to something, but my mid-40s brain can’t cope with it at all. I’m one stage away from having idiot boards, because it’s hardcore! They’re just used to that SNL kind of world.”

Ted Lasso grew quickly in popularity, having released its first season in August 2020, at the height of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. The show’s cheerful tone was cited as helping many viewers deal with the ongoing stress of the pandemic. Ted Lasso season 3 is likely to be the show’s last, with 12 episodes, the same number as season 2.

Though the series is ending after three seasons may seem short, Ted Lasso’s emphasis on character development and rising stakes can be seen as indicators of the show’s shelf life. Many likely wouldn’t mind if the show went on forever, but in a medium that’s increasingly more driven by auteurs rather than ratings, it’s understandable why the creatives would want to end the show while it’s still in its prime, rather than letting it stagnate. Many comedy shows, including Lawrence’s own Scrubs, have been criticized for drawing out the run, leading to tepid responses in later seasons. It’s clear the writers of Ted Lasso want to keep the show the buoyant, fun, and relatable experience it began as, and with its stellar ensemble, the final season is sure to do that.
