Each of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has their roles to play on the team, with Donatello as the genius, Raphael as the muscle, Michelangelo as the quintessential teenager, and Leonardo as the leader, a hierarchy that has left its mark on Leonardo. As the leader of the team, Leonardo has always felt a high level of responsibility over his brothers. Now that their father, Master Splinter, is dead, that responsibility felt by Leo is all the heavier, resulting in a secret trauma the Turtle has just revealed.
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #123 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, and Jodi Nishijima, Leonardo observes as every one of his brothers and friends is getting along with someone outside of their original group, all except for him. Leonardo meets with Casey Jones to attend a fighting event where Leo allows himself to let loose for the first time in quite some time. After the event, Leonardo tells Casey what has been weighing heavy on his mind, revealing a secret trauma he had been carrying all alone.
Leonardo reveals that after the death of Splinter, he felt as though he needed to fill the void his master left open without considering his own needs whatsoever. Leo only thought of the rest of his team as well as the whole mutant community in which they all live and of which he was now the top authority. As his other brothers ventured out to have fun with a number of other people and mutants who are fairly new to the scene, Leonardo never allowed himself to take a break in being the leader, a position he has filled since the first issue of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic.
Even when Splinter was alive, Leonardo was still in charge of the safety and success of his brothers anytime they went to carry out a mission. As the title of the series suggests, the Turtles were just teenagers when the series began and seemingly stayed that way for some time afterwards. The weight of that responsibility was considered a great honor to Leonardo when he first accepted it, with Master Splinter being there for him whenever he needed someone to lean on. As Leo tells Casey in the latest issue, now that Splinter is gone there is no one he can go to for guidance as he is now completely alone as the leader of the mutant community.
Leonardo feels overwhelmed by the leadership role he has been in since he first began his career as a ninja crime fighter. Without Splinter around to provide support, Leonardo has no one he can turn to when he is feeling unsure, and he won’t allow himself to connect with others for fear of distraction from this great responsibility. This is a secret trauma that Leonardo has been living with for years, only just revealing it now in the latest issue of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
