The reviews for Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited time-travel espionage thriller Tenet are in, and they are looking solid.

As of this writing, Tenet currently boasts a positive 88% out of more than 30 critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. While not as highly acclaimed as Nolan’s other movies, Tenet has earned praise for his direction as well as its performances and the film’s unique sci-fi spin on the spy movie genre.

Plot details still cannot be fully examined due to spoilers, though it’s known that the plot involves the director’s enduring fascination with time, as John David Washington’s nameless Protagonist must try to stop a World War III-level plot involving the use of time inversion abilities.

The score puts Tenet somewhere in the middle of Nolan’s filmography in terms of Rotten Tomatoes freshness. The director’s highest rated film on the website remains The Dark Knight, which stands at 94%. This is followed by Memento (93%), Dunkirk (92%) Insomnia (92%), Tenet (88%), Inception (87%), The Dark Knight Rises (87%), Batman Begins (84%), Following (81%), The Prestige (76%) and Interstellar (72%).

Much of the hype surrounding Tenet has centered around whether it would mark the return of major theatrical releases. Initially set to come out on July 17, the film’s release date was pushed back multiple times due to rising cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States, despite being prepared for public screenings overseas. However, both Nolan and Warner Bros. have been reluctant to move the film directly to a V.O.D. release, a contrast to Disney’s recent concession with its upcoming live-action remake of Mulan.

The film opens in theaters overseas on Aug. 26. and arrives in select U.S. cities Sept. 3.
