Terraria How to Beat The Eye of Cthulhu (Boss Guide)

While the early game of Terraria is fun and engaging, progressing through the game’s bosses can offer an exciting challenge and reward good loot. Players can progress in Terraria by defeating multiple bosses, and the first boss they will most likely face is the Eye of Cthulhu.

The Eye of Cthulhu is a Terraria normal mode boss with 2,800 health. Once players have at least 200 HP, 10 Defense, and three NPCs living in houses, the Eye of Cthulhu will have a 33% chance to spawn at night until it’s defeated.

Like most bosses in Terraria, the Eye of Cthulhu is bigger than most normal enemies. It serves as a large target for projectiles, but it’s also difficult for players to dodge its attacks. It is easy to get trapped between the boss and a wall, so players will want to focus on fighting in an open space where they’re free to run.

Ahead of the fight with the Eye of Cthulhu in Terraria, players will want to spend some time building a sky-bridge above the overworld. It should be just high enough that they can’t see any houses and NPCs, but no higher than cloud-level. Any higher and the Eye of Cthulhu won’t spawn. Players are free to build the sky-bridge as long as they’d like, but a good recommendation would be to have it run 999 blocks long in either direction of their house or spawn point.

Alternatively, if players are good at timing jumps and have a grappling hook of some kind, or if they want an excuse to build something big, they could also create a platform stadium. For this, players will need to build a box roughly the same size as the game’s window. They should add rows of platforms that conform to the max jump height: six tiles unless jump-boosting items are equipped. Players can also add ladders and/or rope to aid in vertical movement.

Once the sky-bridge or stadium is made, players will need decent gear to prolong their survival and increase their damage per second. Any armor stronger than iron or lead will suffice, but players may want to consider saving up for platinum armor to further increase their odds. Finally, players will want to find themselves a pair of Hermes boots, which appear in chests scattered throughout the world.

When choosing weapons, players will need to focus on long-range attacks, though a fast swinging sword will help take care of the Eye of Cthulhu’s minions. Shurikens, throwing knives, boomerangs, and a bow with some fire arrows will work well against the Eye of Cthulhu, but a gem-rod will make this fight a breeze, especially if players grow a gem-corn farm.

Players will also want potions to heal and buff themselves. Swiftness potions, healing potions, ironskin potions, and archery potions are recommended.

Fighting the Eye of Cthulhu in Terraria

On a night the Eye of Cthulhu spawns, players will be given a message at the bottom left of their screen that says “You feel an evil presence watching you…” This is their sign to head to their sky-bridge or stadium to begin their fight.

When the Eye of Cthulhu first spawns, it will first attempt to float directly above the player, and three to four Servants of Cthulhu will spawn from its iris. They drop Hearts and Stars on death. Players can let these collect in a pile and pick up what they need when they’re low on health, which will save them some potions.

Once its minions spawn, the Eye of Cthulhu will charge at players three times in succession, dealing heavy damage if it makes contact with the player character. This cycle repeats until the Eye of Cthulhu falls below 50% health.

During this first stage, players will need to keep running from or parkouring around the Eye of Cthulhu, aiming at its center to continuously deal damage. The Eye of Cthulhu ignores walls, so creating obstacles to hide behind is not beneficial.

After falling below 50% health, the Eye of Cthulhu will transform into its second form, turning its iris into a mouth. It loses its defense and no longer spawns Servants of Cthulhu, but it will be more aggressive and quick when it tries to ram the player. If players are using a sky bridge, it’s best to turn around and run in the opposite direction before the boss reaches half health, as stopping and turning in this second stage can allow the Eye of Cthulhu to get a lot of free hits. Players using a stadium will need to quicken their movements as well, which they can accomplish with a Grappling or Gem Hook.

Once the Eye of Cthulhu is close to death, it will begin a flurry of rapid-moving dash attacks, making itself harder to hit. Once its health reaches zero, the Eye of Cthulhu will perform a death animation and drop some loot.

The Eye of Cthulhu needs to be defeated before dawn, 4:30 a.m., or it will run away from the fight. It will also run away if it kills the player, or if it goes too far off-screen.

Players who defeat the Eye of Cthulhu will earn the Terraria Eye on You achievement. On defeat, the boss has a chance to drop three gold, Binoculars, 5-15 Lesser Healing Potions, an Eye of Cthulhu Mask, an Eye of Cthulhu Trophy, and a Badger’s Hat if players defeat it on the same day they defeat the Wall of Flesh. Rewards change when players fight the boss in Terraria’s Corrupt and Crimson worlds. In Corrupt worlds, the boss will drop 30-90 Demonite Ore, 20-50 Unholy arrows, and one to three Corrupt seeds. In Crimson worlds, it will drop 30-90 Crimtane Ore or one to three Crimson Seeds.

If players want another chance against the boss, they’ll be able to find Suspicious Looking Eyes in Gold Chests. Using these will allow players to summon the Eye of Cthulhu at night, and, once players are strong enough, they’ll be able to farm this boss rather easily for more resources.
