Throughout the last ten years, anime has become an entertainment titan, as the famed Japanese animation style has become more and more popular throughout the world. With a large helping of amazing anime shows that made an impact with audiences and found their way to near-universal appeal, no matter where their viewers lived, we have to ask the question – which of them are the most popular?

Sorting these series based on their spot in the IMDb “most popular television” rankings (at the time of writing), we determined the top 10 most “in demand” anime series as the 2010s come to a close and we usher in a new decade.

10 Death Note (2006-2007)

Despite running for just one season, Death Note has, over the course of time, become one of the most popular and well-received anime series ever. It follows Light Yagami, a teenager who becomes a vigilante antihero after discovering a book that allows him to end anyone’s life just by writing their name in it.

Critics and anime buffs praised several aspects of the production, such as its animation, characters, and story, as well as the evolution of the main character – from a fairly upstanding high-school genius to a ruthless killer with a warped view of society.

9 Hunter x Hunter (2011-2014)

The famous anime series Hunter x Hunter follows Gon Freecss, a young boy who discovers that his long-believed-to-be-deceased father is actually alive and working as a licensed Hunter. Wishing to become a member of the well-paid elite group (for people that are recognized by society and the Hunter Association to have skills far above those of an average human) in order to find his dad, he first must pass the notorious Hunter exam.

8 Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (2012-)

The anime series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which encompasses the majority of online anime meme groups, focuses on the various strange, inexplicable escapades of the famed Joestar family.

Based on one of the best-selling mangas of all time, the show has, over the course of its four seasons, become one of the most talked-about anime of all time, as well as one of the most instantly recognizable thanks to its original art style. Praised for its originality, characters, tone, and over-the-top incredulity, JoJo remains an anime staple going into the 2020s.

7 Vinland Saga (2019-)

6 One Piece (1999-)

The long-running mystery anime One Piece is based on the best-selling manga series of all time, following Monkey D. Luffy, a young man with the physical attributes of rubber (the byproduct of eating a supernatural fruit), as he assembles a pirate crew and gets to searching for a legendary treasure known as the “One Piece” which will allow him to become the next King of Pirates.

The series’ popularity has led to it spawning a media franchise and becoming very successful worldwide, and Monkey D. Luffy is easily one of anime’s most recognizable characters – all proof of its lasting effect.

5 Demon Slayer (2019-)

The anime series Demon Slayer was the most hyped anime addition of the year, especially amongst weeb communities. It follows a young boy, Tanjiro, and his sister, Nezuko (known for the bamboo shoot she carries in her mouth), the only members of their family left alive after a horrific demon attack that’s changed Nezuko into a demon herself.

Outraged, Tanjiro seeks to become a demon slayer to avenge his sister and, hopefully, to change her back into a human. Loved by anime aficionados for its characters, visuals, and personality, this unique and creative series will likely maintain its popularity throughout 2020.

4 The Seven Deadly Sins (2014-)

The fantasy-themed Netflix original anime The Seven Deadly Sins follows Elizabeth, a princess who goes on a long journey to find the famed, titular group of seven knights, who have been the subject of much rumor and speculation since their disbanding. Elizabeth believes them, together, to be the only ones who can take back the kingdom from their lifelong rivals, the Holy Knights, who have seized the throne and imposed a tyrannical system of government.

The series has maintained a fairly decently-sized fandom throughout its run and has, since its inception, always been one of the more popular anime picks for both those new to the genre and veteran weebs.

3 One-Punch Man (2015-)

What began as a viral webcomic has gone on to become one of the most popular anime series of the decade. One-Punch Man follows Saitama, a super-powered individual who is so overly trained and skilled (he can defeat enemies with a single punch, hence the name) that he becomes bored with the hero life, wishing only to find a worthy opponent.

The series has been hailed as one of the best new anime of this decade, satirizing the shounen genre but also delivering on its promises of amazing visuals, unique characters, and an original plot.

2 My Hero Academia (2016-)

The ever-popular anime My Hero Academia follows Izuku Midoriya, a young boy born without powers into a world where having superpowers (known as “quirks”) has become the norm. Despite this, his undying interest in the heroes never wavers, as he hopes to one day attend the prestigious Hero U, and, eventually, to join them, even without a quirk – and after a chance encounter with the number-one hero, All Might, he gets several steps closer to fulfilling his destiny.

The anime has attracted a huge (if sometimes toxic) fandom that lauds its characters, plot, and humor; mainstream critics have largely agreed with this assumption, with Academia becoming one of the all-time most-famous shounen animes.

1 Attack on Titan (2013-)

Almost definitely this decade’s most popular anime series, Attack on Titan follows Eren Yeager, who lives in a world where the only surviving city is guarded by large walls to protect the inhabitants from the incomprehensible humanoid Titans, man-eating creatures who will stop at nothing to get to their prey. After his mother’s death at the hand of these horrific beasts, ten-year-old Yeager swears that, once he’s old enough, he’ll enlist in the defense force, killing as many of the terrifying Titans as possible.

The series was a major success in both Japan and the U.S., boosting the franchise’s popularity at home and abroad. It’s also been met with mainstream critical acclaim for its writing, action, visuals, and characters, and it will definitely have a staying power as we head into the next decade.
