Parents in horror movies are generally not model parents as a rule, but these particular horror flick moms and dads are the worst.
You Are Reading :[thien_display_title]
You can’t choose your family. Horror movie makers have made this unfortunate fact the focus of their features since the early days of the genre. Family trauma, abusive relationships, and intergenerational violence are, unfortunately, universal realities, and their frightful consequences know no bounds. The damage and suffering parents pass down to their offspring is especially potent, a subject explored in multiple scary movies.
Whether they are cannibals, serial killers, occultists, or domineering tyrants, all of the parents on this list demonstrate the worst possible child-rearing techniques imaginable. These mothers and fathers exploit their children and implicate them in their gruesome schemes, often putting their brood on a direct path toward imminent doom.
10 The Laemles In Parents (1989)
Actor Bob Balaban directed this satirical horror treasure set in the 1950s. Randy Quaid and Mary Beth Hurt play the Laemles, a traditional couple living the suburban dream with their son, Michael. As Michael gets older, he starts to question all the extra meat packed in the freezer, which his father always seems to bring home after a day of work at the local mortuary.
Michael soon realizes his parents are cannibals, and things come to a head when they consume his school psychologist. While his parents hope to bring their son on board, Michael is too traumatized by the situation to know what to do.
9 Ellen Taper Leigh In Hereditary (2018)
In Ari Aster’s Hereditary, Ellen Leigh Tapper is the distant mother of Annie Graham. Tapper dies at the beginning of the film, but her choices and legacy reach Annie and her family from beyond. After her 13-year-old daughter is killed in a terrible accident, Annie discovers her mother was part of an esoteric religious order that seeks to summon the demon Paimon.
In order to bring Paimon to the world of the living, Tapper has been sacrificing various members of her family in hopes of winning his favor. Annie reveals both her brother and father died under mysterious circumstances, and it soon becomes obvious Annie, her husband, and her son are next. Tapper will not be winning any “Mother of the Year” awards.
8 Jack Torrance In The Shining (1980)
In Stanley Kubrick’s treasured adaption of Stephen King’s The Shining, Jack Nicholson plays the troubled and tortured writer Jack Torrance, who turns out to be the perfect prey for all the evil forces coming at the Overlook Hotel, where Torrance and his family are spending the winter as caretakers.
As Jack becomes more and more involved with the supernatural energies guiding his turn toward nefariousness, his attachment to reality waivers and the violent qualities he’s sought to eradicate in himself come out in full force. He turns against his wife Wendy and son Danny, the latter of whom has a special ability to interact with the spirit world.
7 The Mother In Goodnight Mommy (2014)
In this psychologically exhausting Austrian horror film, a single mother returns to her isolated home after receiving some kind of reconstructive surgery. Her face bandaged, she becomes an offputting presence for her twin boys, Elias and Lukas. As the days progress, the young boys question the mental health of their mother. She displays strange behaviors and ignores Lukas altogether. They come to the conclusion that she may not be their mother at all.
Lacking love or compassion, the woman treats the boys cruelly, violently lashing out against them. Eventually, the boys turn the tides on her, and the film takes insane twists and turns toward a fiery conclusion.
6 Mother And Father In Dogtooth (2009)
Yorgos Lanthimos is behind this Greek language feature about three young adult children who are restricted to the confines of their family home by their overbearing parents. The parents manage to keep their offspring in line by creating an elaborate alternative narrative about the outside world.
The two sisters and brother have never been allowed to leave their house, which is reinforced by a tall fence. When the father’s assistant stops by to give the girls a present, the delicate facade maintained by the dubious parents quickly crumbles, and the children start to question what’s really happening.
5 The Robesons In The People Under The Stairs (1991)
Wes Craven’s cult film about life in 1990s Los Angeles features two of the most despicable parents of all time: the Robesons. They are cruel landlords ruling over their apartment buildings without any regard for their residents. It soon becomes obvious to the film’s protagonist, a young neighborhood boy named Fool, that they are much worse than this.
The Robesons are actually siblings having an inappropriate affair, and they have attempted to raise a brood of boys they acquired through kidnapping. The children always disobey the Robesons in some way, and after being tortured, they are sent to live in a sealed-off basement underneath the house. Fortunately, Fool turns out to be a formidable tike, and he’s able to set the poor children free, giving them the ability to enact revenge against their captors.
4 The Ryans In Mom And Dad (2017)
Mom and Dad has a pretty silly premise: parents are suddenly overcome by a strange disorder that causes them to turn against their children. Selma Blair and Nicholas Cage play the title characters, and as they watch the world around them descend into chaos, soon enough they turn homicidal on their two children.
These parents join the rest of the parents in the film, those who become intent upon eradicating their offspring, much like certain species of animals do in nature. They will stop at nothing until their kids are smashed to a pulp.
3 Margaret White In Carrie (1976)
In Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Steven King’s classic novel, Piper Laurie plays the oppressive and puritanical mother of the title character, portrayed by Sissy Spacek. Between her troubles at school and her new telekinetic abilities, Carrie just wants her mother to love and support her. Instead, Margaret treats Carrie like an agent of pure evil.
As a devout, fanatical Christian, Margaret’s paranoia is infinite, and she really does a number on her poor daughter. After the infamous, bloody prom scene at the center of the film, Carrie returns home, where she’s forced to contend with her mother and a large kitchen knife.
2 Mum And Dad In Mum & Dad (2008)
A disturbing British horror film, Mum & Dad focuses on two parents who have trained their children to be accomplices in their favorite past time: kidnapping and torture. When a woman named Lena accepts her colleague Birdie’s invitation to hang out at her house, she becomes the latest victim in the hideous routine acted out by Birdie’s psychopathic parents.
It turns out Birdie and her adopted brother are also in on it, but they are clearly so screwed up by their parents’ choices they don’t know what else to do but follow in their homicidal footsteps.
1 Norma Bates In Pyscho (1960)
In Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous film, Anthony Perkins plays hotel proprietor Norman Bates. When a woman named Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh, makes the unfortunate choice to spend the night at Norman’s hotel after stealing $40,000 from her boss, she meets her end in the shower.
As the violence escalates, it becomes obvious Norman has experienced severe trauma courtesy of his tyrannical mother, Norma. In fact, Norman has dealt with the pain brought on by her abuses by adopting multiple personalities, the most murderous of which is a reimaging of his dear mother.
