Robin just can’t catch a big screen break, recent news from the set of The Batman confirms. Robin the Boy Wonder is undoubtedly an integral part of Batman comic canon. The original iteration, Dick Grayson, was introduced very early in the Caped Crusader’s publication history, and the likes of Jason Todd and Damian Wayne have been involved in some of DC’s most popular and memorable Batman arcs. Unfortunately, Robin hasn’t found as much joy in the cinematic realm. Played by Chris O’Donnell in Batman Forever, Robin became synonymous with the oft-maligned Joel Schumacher Batman movies; a throwback character to the camp 1960s era of Adam West and Burt Ward with green tights and puns abound.

In response, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy was famously anti-Robin, with Christian Bale not especially keen to explore that element of his character’s comic past. The closest Nolan’s Batman movies came to interpreting Robin was with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake, who was an orphan chosen by Bruce Wayne as a successor, and was revealed to be named Robin at the very end of the film. In truth, this was more of an Easter egg than a genuine attempt to translate the character, but Robin seemed set for a big screen comeback in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, with persistent rumors suggesting the director was casting a young Boy Wonder. As recently as October last year, reports claimed Robin would appear in The Batman, and actors such as Timothée Chalamet have been repeatedly attached to the role.

Unfortunately, the recent spate of information revealed by both Reeves himself and photos from the filming of The Batman strongly indicate that Robin fans are set to be disappointed yet again at the movies, with the archetypal sidekick highly unlikely to feature. Matt Reeves’ The Batman suit reveal was both brief and dimly lit, but provided a good enough glimpse at Pattinson’s Dark Knight to get a feel for the superhero’s direction, and that feel is a distinctly homemade one. The pieced together armor and visible stitching on the mask are indicative of a Batman very early in his career, with subsequent reports revealing Bruce Wayne has been an active vigilante for only 2 years when The Batman begins.

Images leaked from on-location filming support this assessment. Pattinson is wearing a relatively rudimentary Batsuit and may not even have his Batmobile yet. Evidently, Bruce Wayne will still be a fairly fresh to the crime-fighting game in The Batman, and this means any notion of taking on an apprentice is vastly unlikely. Of course, Ben Affleck was once set to play the title character in The Batman, and his entire DCEU arc revolves around getting over the death of Robin to work with alongside superheroes again. As such, it would’ve made sense if Reeves and DC were looking to cast a new sidekick while Affleck’s older Bruce Wayne was still the star.

The more youthful Pattinson stepping in, however, arguably sealed Robin’s fate. Although Pattinson isn’t significantly younger than Michael Keaton or Christian Bale were when taking on the role, Robert Pattinson still feels like a teenage heartthrob actor because, for many, he remains Edward Cullen of the Twilight franchise. Because of this youthful perception, the idea of Pattinson becoming a father figure to an orphaned pre-teen and passing on his skills and experience (all two years of it) isn’t a concept The Batman will be able to sell easily. But while omitting Robin makes sense against an already young Batman, the Boy Wonder’s absence will no doubt come as a disappointment to the many fans still waiting for a big screen version of the character that does justice to the comic book original.
