The Best Costume Redesigns In DC Comics History

DC Comics has made some iconic costume redesigns over the years. Changing a costume can be a difficult move for a comic publisher to make, as fans of the original might feel alienated by a new look. Not all redesigns work, but some of them have been absolutely home runs that helped redefine a character’s appearance in new and exciting ways.

DC has made some bold costume redesigns in its more than 80 years as a publisher. More often than not, the looks have stuck around, at least for the short term. But in the case of five costumes, they were so fantastic, not only did they build on their previous ensembles, but became their best comic costumes ever. It’s important to state if a costume made this list, it doesn’t mean their previous look was bad. A handful of costumes just missed making the list, including Tim Drake’s Red Robin outfit, Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern costume (following Alan Scott’s), and Superboy’s black T-shirt look.

Catwoman

Darwyn Cooke is a legend in the comic book industry for good reason. The late author and artist of DC: The New Frontier and Richard Stark’s Parker: The Hunter, made his mark over his career with a number of incredible books, featuring a handful of redesigns and reimagining of classic characters. In the early 2000s, Cooke redesigned Selina Kyle’s costume which would first appear as part of his Catwoman work with Ed Brubaker.

Catwoman’s look in the ’90s was more or less a purple bodysuit with cat ears. Cooke completely revamped the costume, giving her cat-eye goggles, a leather zip-up costume, big boots, and a belt featuring her whip. The costume not only modernized Catwoman, but it made her look cooler and sexier than ever. Variations of the ensemble still are used to this day – most recently appearing in the Harley Quinn animated series. As far as redesigns go, Cooke’s Catwoman is the best there ever is.

Batgirl

Barbara Gordon received a new costume as part of a creative revamp that was aimed towards a young adult audience. Gone was the skintight, black and white costume which she wore at the start of the New 52 era. Replacing it was a colorful suit by Babs Tarr and Cameron Stewart that ditched her usual spandex getup for something more functional.

The costume was divisive for certain readers who thought it made Batgirl look too young, but considering the series was aimed towards a younger audience, it makes sense her suit reflected that. The jacket and pants combination with yellow accents throughout, including the utility belt felt totally fresh and modern. The costume honored her retro look of the ’60s while giving readers something new. Ultimately, it’s the best costume Batgirl has ever worn.

Deadshot

When Deadshot first appeared way back in Batman #59, he looked nothing like the sharpshooter does today. Instead, Deadshot wore a top hat with a suit, with a simple mask on his eyes as a villain who was desperate to replace Batman. He looked more like Zatara than the character would eventually lead the Suicide Squad.

In Detective Comics #474 by Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers, Terry Austin, Jerry Serpe, and Ben Oda, Deadshot made a surprise reappearance. In the comics, Deadshot breaks free from prison and decides to adopt a whole new look that’s much more intimidating than his sillier debut costume. He would be given a targeting device on his right eye, and a red costume with metal accents. While smaller elements of his costume would change over the years, Deadshot still wears a similar costume to this day – and even wore a similar look in 2016’s Suicide Squad film. It’s hilarious to think how different his original look was now, given who Deadshot’s become in the comics.

Nightwing

Nightwing has become one of, if not the most popular, character to spin out of the Bat-Family. But, when he first ditched his Robin outfit for a new costume as Nightwing – it was a product of its time. Known as the disco suit, Nightwing looked like he was ready to take the dancefloor in Saturday Night Fever as opposed to fighting crime. The popped collar, open chest, and mishmash of colors wasn’t a horrible look but was unintentionally immediately dated.
