The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

Callie Adams Foster first entered the lives of the Foster family as Callie Jacob, a beaten-up teenage girl straight from juvie. Lena had taken her in uncertainly, and after learning about Callie’s younger brother, Jude, she and Stef agreed to keep the siblings until they found their permanent home.

Over time, Callie proved herself to be more than a young delinquent, showing her vulnerability in rare displays. By “I Do,” Stef and Lena had decided to make Callie and Jude permanent figures of their family. However, Callie had grown up in survival mode and was not used to being able to relax. Thus, while Callie made multiple excellent choices during the series, she also made some bad ones as well.

10 WORST: RUNNING AWAY

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

Spending years jumping from foster home to foster home, Callie and Jude are finally offered a family to call their own. Stef and Lena are ecstatic when the two agree to join the family, and everything is looking up for the Foster family. However, happiness does not last long as Callie decides that this is the time to kiss Brandon. Seen by Jude, Callie tries to explain herself, but Jude is justifiably angry about Callie’s actions calling her selfish.

To ensure Jude’s adoption, Callie believes her only choice is to run away and let Jude have the family he deserves. Callie’s decision to run has a disastrous effect on her family as they attempt to find her. While ending up in Girls United may have been one of the best things that could have happened to Callie, running away from people who love her was not the right answer.

9 BEST: SENIOR PROJECT

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

After various considerations for her senior project, Callie decides on a visual piece. The artistry is a representation of the foster system and the reality of Callie’s life throughout it. Images of Callie and Jude, their previous foster homes, as well as newspaper clippings of Liam and other articles discussing the system line the walls. From within it, a speaker plays an officer talking to an inmate, the way a prisoner would hear it.

By doing this, Callie brings the harsh reality of the foster and justice system to the attention of her classmates. She even gets a nod from Talya, who thanks Callie, for bringing this to her attention.

8 WORST: BREAKING AND ENTERING

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

Proving the innocence of her previous foster brother, Kyle, Callie is willing to do anything to find the truth. Believing that a curb painter, Doug Harvey, was more involved than is being admitted to, Callie digs deeper. She performs above and beyond what is asked of her.

She evens goes as far as to sneak into Doug Harvey’s house and steal a toothbrush to get his DNA. Callie’s actions to save an innocent person are admirable. Unfortunately, she is not invisible. Doug Harvey arrives home while Callie is still in the house. Although she gets out, Doug had seen and recognized, Callie.

7 BEST: ENDING HER ROMANCE WITH BRANDON

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

Callie and Brandon had an undeniable connection, understanding each other better than most others. However, their relationship was doomed from the start. Their romance only brought pain to everyone around them as it prevented Callie’s ability to be adopted.

During “Padre,” the two realize just how much Callie must give up for Callie and Brandon to be together. Instead, Callie tells Brandon that she wants a family. In the series finale, Brandon and Callie determine that a relationship between them would have just burned out, and they were much better off with the way life played out.

6 WORST: STARTING A ROMANCE WITH BRANDON

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

Both Callie and Brandon knew the rules about not getting romantically involved with a foster sibling. Yet, they cross the line deciding their relationship is worth the risk. Instead, it causes heartbreak and problems for each of them and their whole family. At one point, Brandon states that Callie only comes to him when things are going badly for her.

Occasionally, Callie and Brandon found themselves go back to each other, and each time it had made things more difficult. While they may have had a secure connection, it was much better off as a friendship or familial one rather than romantic.

5 BEST: HELPING XIMENA

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

Callie has had enough issues to last more than a lifetime, but when she meets Ximena, Callie jumps to help her. When Ximena admits she has not reapplied her DACA due to wanting to protect her family’s placement in America, things become complicated when ICE learns about Ximena’s family.

Wanting to outrun the police, Callie, Ximena, and AJ hide in a church that is considered a sanctuary and stay there until Stef appears to help. Callie goes further, placing the events on social media to gain support and recorded evidence about the affairs.

4 WORST: PUTTING HER ADOPTION AT RISK

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

Impulse issues tended to be one of Callie’s most significant problems during the show. They were also deeply involved in placing her adoption at risk. There were moments that the right thing to do counteracted the best thing for Callie as an individual, and she would think of others before herself.

This is not a bad quality, but as fans wanted to see Callie adopted, her decisions were maddening due to the ripple effects. There was never a feeling of certainty about Callie’s status until the moment she was officially adopted in “Lucky.”

3 BEST: GOING TO LAW SCHOOL

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

At first, applying for art school may have made more sense given Callie’s love of photography and the nature of her senior project. However, as a person, it ended up being much interesting for Callie to take the law route. Always wanting to find justice for people, it was only natural that Callie turn her hobby of fighting for justice into her profession.

Making Law her major also gave the audience a rest going into Good Trouble. Knowing that Callie had spent five years studying the law, it would be less likely she would be tempted to break it.

2 WORST: GETTING IN A CAR WITH A PIMP

The Fosters Callies 5 Best Decisions (& 5 Worst)

When she believed that going to jail was soon was in her near future, Callie decided that no decision she could make would change the judge’s mind. So, rather than lay low for the chance that she may get a different ruling, Callie jumps in the car with a dangerous man to be with and help Diamond, a teenage prostitute.

Sex trafficking had been a significant part of the show leading up to this choice. Callie’s decision to go with them leads to one of the show’s most heartbreaking moments. Desperate to find Callie and unsure about what she’ll find, Stef knocks on car trunks whispering Callie’s name. Once Callie is brought home, Stef and Lena give her an important talk, explaining to Callie that this will not happen again.

1 BEST: CHOOSING TO BE ADOPTED

It was not enough for Stef and Lena to ask Callie and Jude to be adopted, Callie and Jude had to want it. After a long road, it is finally Callie’s turn to officially become a Foster. However, it could not have happened without Callie actively moving towards the goal.

She had to work hard to remain in people’s good graces to be recommended for adoption. The moments the judge declares Callie as a member of the family is one of the happiest in the show, and one of the most earned. Their growth as a family shows itself in those minutes, as well as Callie’s love for Stef and Lena.
