The Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen Is The First SleepTracking Smart Display

As part of its continued expansion into the smart home market, Google has just announced the second-generation Nest Hub. Google launched the original Nest Hub back in 2018 (formerly known as the Home Hub), and since its unveiling over two years ago, it’s continued to stand out as one of the better smart displays on the market. Between its excellent display, robust interface, compact design, and $99 price tag, it’s one of those smart home gadgets that appeals to a lot of people.

That said, there’s been a lot of pent-up excitement for Google to launch a successor to the Nest Hub. Not only does the timing make sense, but Amazon has been doing really impressive things with its Echo Show lineup in recent years — such as the latest Echo Show 10 launching earlier this year with a moving display. At long last, Google finally has something to talk about.

The second-generation Nest Hub was unveiled by Google on March 16, 2021, and at first glance, it looks a lot like the current Nest Hub. It has the same 7-inch display, fabric + plastic design, and doesn’t have a camera. Under the hood, however, there are a few notable improvements that are worth talking about. Google says that speakers of the second-gen Nest Hub deliver 50% more bass compared to the first-gen model, and considering that speaker quality is one of the weakest points of the Nest Hub, any improvement here is more than welcome. Google has also added Quick Gestures, allowing users to move their hand in front of the second-gen Nest Hub’s display to do things like play/pause a song or podcast without actually touching it. And, thanks to an on-device machine learning chip, Google Assistant commands should be faster (and continue to get faster over time).

Sleep Tracking Is The Biggest New Feature For The 2nd Gen Nest Hub

While all of those upgrades are great to see, the main talking point for the new Nest Hub is its sleep tracking capability — called Sleep Sensing. Using the same Soli radar technology that was found in the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, the second-gen Nest Hub is able to track users’ sleep without the need for a camera, wearable, or any other type of invasive technology. Assuming someone opts-in to use Sleep Sensing, the Nest Hub will automatically track sleep activity of the person closest to the Nest Hub. The Nest Hub is able to detect someone’s movement and breathing using the Soli radar chip, and thanks to its microphones and other sensors, it can also pick up on coughing, snoring, and light/temperature changes overnight.

After the user wakes up, they’re given a personalized summary of their sleep from that night. Sleep Sensing will show how long someone slept for, the quality of the sleep, and can offer tips on how to improve sleep quality — such as creating a personalized bedtime schedule and other recommendations. This info can be viewed on the Nest Hub by saying, “Hey Google, how did I sleep?,” or users can view their sleep information in the Google Fit app.

All of that may sound like a massive privacy concern to some people, but Google has reassured that it’s designed Sleep Sensing to be as safe as can be. The feature can only be used if users opt-in to it, a visual indicator appears when Sleep Sensing is on, and Google’s use of Soli radar means the Nest Hub is only tracking movements/motion instead of actual people. For those that are interested in what Google’s done with the second-gen Nest Hub, pre-orders are available right now and it begins shipping on March 30. It’s also priced at $99, the exact same as the previous Nest Hub.
