Developer Capcom’s E3 presentation included a brand new story trailer and gameplay demonstration for The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, the latest two-part addition into the long-running Ace Attorney legal deduction and puzzle series. The Chronicles set includes both Great Ace Attorney titles, the first called Adventures and the second subtitled Resolve.

Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was previously a Japan-limited title. The first game was released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2015, with the second following in 2017. Both titles later saw Japan-only releases for Android and iOS devices. The American and European release of Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, which was announced in April, is the first time that the Great Ace Attorney games have seen an official English translation. It also marks the titles’ official debut for the Nintendo Switch.

The Great Ace Attorney games take place far in the past and star Ryunosuke Naruhodo, an ancestor of primary series protagonist Ryuichi Naruhodo a.k.a Phoenix Wright. Along with his assistant Susato, Ryunosuke travels from Japan to London to study the European justice system. There, he must face down a series of tricky trials and convince the juries of Londoners that his clients are not guilty.

The new story trailer presented at E3 focuses heavily on the characters who Ryunosuke and Susato will meet in London. It shows off Herlock Sholmes, a re-imagining of famous literary detective Sherlock Holmes, who recently gained popularity on social media once it was revealed that his name had been changed to avoid litigation by the estate of original Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Other characters shown include a nameless judge who might just be an ancestor of the judge from Phoenix’s time and Barok van Zieks, a prosecutor who brings wine into the courtroom and throws glasses of it when he is upset. We also got to see a hint of Ryunosuke’s steampunk-inspired lodgings and the interior of the courthouse.

The subsequent gameplay demo, which showed off the Dance of Deduction and Summation Examination mechanics, also revealed a few new characters. In particular, viewers got to see Ryunosuke and Herlock interrogate Nikolina Pavlova, a Russian ballerina disguised as a man for mysterious reasons. Some jurors were also shown, each with distinct personalities and styles of debate, but they were referred to by the numbers one through six instead of by name.

Capcom’s E3 presentation confirmed that the two games together will include ten new full-length cases and eight mini-adventures starring Ryunosuke, Susato, and Herlock. Pre-orders for The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, which are available now, will also unlock additional music and art via the “From the Vaults” expansion, which will be released on September 1st.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles will release for Nintendo Switch on July 27, 2021.
