Alfred and Uhtred weren’t exactly allies, but they managed to save each other several times in The Last Kingdom.

Alfred, portrayed by David Dawson, needed Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) as much as Uhtred needed him, but that didn’t make them friends. As David Dawson, who plays Alfred in The Last Kingdom, said in an interview that Alfred saw Uhtred as a man that needed to be controlled (not trusted) so he looked for a way of owning him. However, during their last meeting, Alfred admitted that Uhtred is a man he never understood yet without whom he wouldn’t have died a king.

Uhtred chewed through the leash more times than Alfred liked leading to their difficult bromance that always ended in one saving the other whether they liked it or not. While Alfred didn’t help Uhtred achieve his dream of becoming the lord of Bebbanburg, he saved him many times to allow him the chance to retake his home one day. Uhtred also saved Alfred lots of times and helped him become God’s king as he intended.

10 Uhtred: The Battle Of Ashdown

Uhtred and Brida running around in the bushes, having fun despite the threats to their lives was a welcome sight in the first season. Having lost a father, hunted by Kjartan and Ubba, and with Brida cursed by a sorcerer, the two lovers were very desperate. However, Uhtred still managed to save the whole of Wessex and Alfred in the process.

Uhtred and Brida, with everything to lose, spied on Guthrum and Ubba as they planned to attack and managed to warn Alfred in time, saving him and Wessex. Alfred, however, refused to grant him the only wish he had of helping him retake Bebbanburg. It, however, opened the way for him to become the lord of Coccham, which was something considering he had nothing.

9 Alfred: Saving Uhtred From The Danes

Ubba was one of Uhtred’s greatest enemies, which is unfair because Uhtred only went to him to explain his case; Well, he kidnapped his sorcerer Storri, but that was only to buy some leverage. With Ubba, Guthrum, and Kjartan all seeking to kill him, Uhtred was a dead man walking if Alfred didn’t take him in.

Alfred had the option of putting him away despite Beocca’s pleas, but he knew better. During the peace negotiations, Ubba adamantly called for poor Uhtred’s head as his price for leaving the Saxons alone, which was a viable option for Alfred’s Witan, but he saved and took Uhtred into his army instead.

8 Uhtred: The Siege Of Wessex

The siege of Wessex would have been avoided if Alfred just forgave Uhtred his of debt to the church, which he himself forced him into in the first place. His desire to control Uhtred led to all the events that ended in Uhtred’s duel to the death with Leofric that took away the attention of Wessex from Guthrum’s advancing army.

However, after fleeing the siege, thanks to Brida, Uhtred still came to Alfred’s aid while he was being pursued by Danes during his escape. He helped Alfred, who was disguised as a priest, and his family get onto the boat and flee into the marshlands, a compromise Alfred wouldn’t have made for Uhtred considering he had just condemned him to death the day before. Uhtred also did well in reminding Alfred that he was king of nothing now that his stupidity had caused him to lose Wessex.

7 Alfred: The Duel With Leofric

The fight to the death between Uhtred and Leofric was hard to watch since the two friends were like brothers. The two were also loyal, and Alfred needed them both but being a king meant he had to make hard choices, and Uhtred had forced his hand by refusing to kneel and apologize.

Alfred was too hurt to watch the two kill each other that he walked away from the duel, but he actually saved Uhtred in disguise. He had the option of sticking to his earlier judgment of just killing Uhtred but agreeing to a duel gave Uhtred a second chance at life. If Alfred hadn’t agreed to the idea of the duel, Guthrum’s armies would have arrived to find a dead Uhtred.

6 Uhtred: The Battle Of Edington

Losing his kingdom and fleeing to the marshlands was killing Alfred faster than his sickness. Uhtred managed to come up with the perfect plan of weakening Guthrum by defeating Ubba’s reserve forces, which was key in helping Alfred win the battle. Uhtred’s courage and strategy also helped Alfred raise an army strong enough to go into battle against the Danes.

If Alfred didn’t have the army, Aethelwold, who was now working for Guthrum, wouldn’t have hesitated to kill him. Uhtred’s rage at Iseult’s death also made him break the Danes’ shield wall allowing the Saxons to win the decisive battle, which meant Alfred remained king.

5 Alfred: Sverri’s Slave Ship

Uhtred’s time with Guthred ended in disaster as the king he had saved and helped swear in turned on him and sold him into slavery. Uhtred’s first mistake was leaving Ragnar and Brida imprisoned in Wessex when he went North. When Hild came with the news of Uhtred’s plight, Alfred thought it wasn’t wise to send an army to save him.

Alfred, however, released Brida and Young Ragnar to go look for Uhtred and save him. While it is true he owed Uhtred a lot more than releasing his brother and sister to him, he still did well and saved him in the end. Uhtred didn’t stand a chance against Sverri until Brida and Ragnar arrived.

4 Uhtred: The Battle Of Fearnham

Bloodhair was a coward, but his resolve to keep Skade was strong enough to get him to do anything. He was already convinced that he would kill Alfred and take over Wessex, which is why he wouldn’t have attacked the Saxons at Aescengum Burh if Uhtred hadn’t kidnapped Skade.

If he went straight for Wessex, Alfred’s army wouldn’t have stopped him, meaning his dream of bathing in Alfred’s blood would have come true, but then there was Uhtred. Uhtred managed to use Skade as leverage to draw Bloodhair into a battle he didn’t stand a chance of winning, and with that, Alfred had one weaker enemy to deal with.

3 Alfred: The First Battle Of Baemfleot

Alfred developed a habit of saving Uhtred without planning it, and this was one of those times. Alfred wasn’t at Baemfleot to save Alfred nor Aethelflaed at that. Uhtred’s suicidal plan of freeing Aethelflaed and making a run for it was almost ending in disaster until he came across Alfred and Odda’s mutinying fyrd.

Coincidence worked in everyone’s favor once more as the now strengthened army with commanders that didn’t agree turned on Sigefrid to save Uhtred and Aethelflaed. If Alfred chose to follow his earlier plan to punish Odda instead of focussing on what was more important, Sigefrid would have recaptured Athelflaed, killed Uhtred, and probably taken Wessex.

2 Uhtred: By Saving Aethelflaed

Aethelflaed becoming Erik and Sigefrid’s hostage was the greatest threat Alfred ever face throughout his reign as king. Erik and Sigefrid had a perfect plan that had worked for them all along, which would eventually end in Alfred’s death.

Alfred and his Witan had lost control of the process, and he was planning to pay the ransom to the brothers, which they would, in turn, use to raise the army that would finally kill him. Uhtred’s quick thinking came to Alfred’s aid. Uhtred also stayed to fight Sigefrid and kill him and his army, saving Alfred, Wessex, and Mercia in the process.

1 Alfred: The Second Battle Of Baemfleot

Skade was Uhtred’s fault, although the curse was Aethelflaed’s fault, but that didn’t make Alfred responsible for Uhtred’s Dane problems. However, without recovering Skade from Haesten, Uhtred and his men remained cursed and hence would die if the Saxons didn’t help him fight.

Uhtred did a great job convincing Haesten to pursue him to Baemfleot for the battle, but that wouldn’t have amounted to much because he was enormously outnumbered. Alfred showed up to save Uhtred even though he was too weak to fight. He saved Uhtred one more time, helping Edward and Wessex as a whole in the process.
