Not all of Mjolnir’s powers have been explored in the MCU, and there’s a very important one that Thor hasn’t used. Here’s what it is.

The MCU Has Forgotten Mjolnirs Other Big Power

In his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, Thor has used Mjolnir to fight different villains, to summon thunder, and to fly, but there’s another big power this hammer has and that was mentioned by Odin in Thor, but it hasn’t been used yet. In over 10 years, the MCU has brought various characters from Marvel Comics to the big screen, from classics like Captain America to newer ones like the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as others who became more popular and known once they jumped to the big screen, as was the case of Thor.

The God of Thunder, played by Chris Hemsworth, made his MCU debut in 2011 in the movie simply titled Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh. The movie followed the title character who after reigniting war with Laufey and the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, was banished to Earth by his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). This also included taking his powers away, and the only way he could get them back was by proving himself worthy of them, and as a result, he wasn’t able to lift his famous hammer, Mjolnir. Although Thor eventually learned a big lesson of humility and gratitude, thus making him worthy again, at first he was pretty much useless without his hammer, which has a lot more power than just energy blasts, lightning manipulation, and flight.

During the coronation scene in Thor, Odin gave a speech in which he described Mjolnir, mentioning where it comes from and that its power has no equal as a weapon to destroy or “as a tool to build”, thus making it a fit companion for a king. Mjolnir has been used various times in the MCU to fight and destroy, and among its many uses shown on the big screen so far are density manipulation (which has allowed Thor to strike his opponents with great force and even pin them down), energy blasts, lightning manipulation, physical augmentation, and flight, through which Thor has been able to defeat a couple of bad guys and destroy many things along the way, but what about the “tool to build” part of Odin’s description?

In the comics, Thor has used Mjolnir’s capacity to build various times, though some of them have been questioned by fans, as not all of them feel they fit the definition of “build”. For example, Thor once rebuilt Asgard in Oklahoma by waving Mjolnir around, another time he literally used the hammer to smith a new suit of armor, and he built a trench by smashing Mjolnir on the ground. So far in the MCU, Thor hasn’t used Mjolnir to build anything, though once again, some fans have put this into question. Some of them argue that it depends on the interpretation of “build”, as Thor used the hammer’s power to bring Vision to life in Avengers: Age of Ultron, while others argue Mjolnir has been used to “build trust, peace, and security” between Thor and the rest of the Avengers.

Still, Mjolnir as a “tool to build” hasn’t been seen in the MCU, but with Thor getting another solo movie with Thor: Love and Thunder, which will see Jane Foster becoming Mighty Thor as she did in the comics, there’s still hope for this universe to show the hammer’s other big power, which makes way for a lot of interesting and visually entertaining possibilities.
