The Mummy Franchise Timeline When All The Movies Take Place

Here’s a complete timeline breakdown for The Mummy franchise, including The Scorpion King spinoffs. Universal had tried for years to mount a remake of The Mummy, with horror greats such as George A. Romero, Clive Barker and Wes Craven all circling it. The studio saw the project as a mid-range budget movie, but after director Stephen Sommers pitched his Indiana Jones-inspired take, it became a blockbuster. While it’s CGI effects don’t hold up so well today it’s still a very entertaining adventure that’s held together by Brendan Fraser’s lead performance.

Most of the cast and crew came back for 2001’s The Mummy Returns, which featured a cameo from wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as new villain the Scorpion King. The sequel was another success despite being a noisier retread of its predecessor, and Johnson later received his first lead role with a 2002 spinoff. While the main Mummy series ended in 2008 and was later rebooted with the 2017 Tom Cruise movie, The Scorpion King franchise is still ongoing.

This makes The Mummy timeline a little tangled, so here’s every entry in order.

The Scorpion King 2: Rise Of A Warrior – 3087 BC

The Scorpion King 2 is a prequel to a spinoff to a sequel to a remake, which certainly makes it unique. The movie is set in 3087 BC and charts the training of future Scorpion King Mathayus (Michael Copon) and his battle against Randy Couture’s (The Expendables) villain.

The Scorpion King – 3077 BC

Dwayne Johnson reprises Mathayus from The Mummy Returns and is set a decade after the events of Rise Of A Warrior. Mathayus is now an assassin sent to kill the sorceress Cassandra, who is working for evil king Memnon, but instead he falls in love with her and they defeat Memnon. In the end, they triumph and Mathayas becomes king, though Cassandra warns their peace won’t last long.

The Scorpion King 3: Battle For Redemption – 3070 BC

The Scorpion King 3 from 2012 proved Cassandra right as an infection swept their kingdom, killing her and ending the Scorpion King’s reign. Mathayus (now played by Victor Webster) becomes an assassin again and is hired to stop a King recovering the Book of the Dead from The Mummy series. This third entry boasts a supporting cast that includes Ron Perlman, Billy Zane and Dave Bautista (Guardians Of The Galaxy).

The Scorpion King 4: The Quest For Power – 306X BC

The Scorpion King 4 takes place close to Mathayus’ quest to take over the world in 3067 BC, but the exact year it takes place is unknown. In this fourth adventure, he’s betrayed by a friend and has to stop him using a magical urn in his titular quest for power.

The Scorpion King: Book Of Souls – 306X BC

The fifth and final (?) movie Book Of Souls sees Zach McGowan (Black Sails) take over as the Scorpion King, this time seeking to stop a warlord using a sword dubbed the “Fang of Anubis” that can steal souls.

The Mummy – 1926

The bulk of The Mummy is set in 1926 and details an expedition to the lost city of Hamunaptra to find the mystical Book of the Dead. This raises the title creature from the dead and it’s up to adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and academic Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) to stop him destroying the world.

The Mummy Returns – 1933

The Mummy Returns jumps ahead nine years to find Rick and Evelyn married with a very annoying son named Alex. The story finds the mummy Imhotep resurrected once more since he’s the only one powerful enough to defeat Johnson’s Scorpion King, who sold his soul to Anubis following his world-conquering quest ending in failure; if Imhotep slays Mathayus he inherits his power.

The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor – 1946

The final instalment of The Mummy trilogy jumps ahead thirteen years as the O’Connell clan face off against Jet Li’s resurrected warlord, who can also turn into a dragon.
