Warning: contains preview pages for Amazing Spider-Man #80!

Ben Reilly has returned to the role of Spider-Man and is already coming under fire from some of Peter’s greatest foes, including Kraven the Hunter, who is offering the new Spider-Man an upgrade. In a preview for Amazing Spider-Man #80, on sale in print and digital December 1, Kraven has returned to New York, stalking Spider-Man, with a deadly offer for the Wall-Crawler.

The “Beyond” story, currently running through Amazing Spider-Man has seen Ben Reilly, the infamous clone of Peter Parker, step back into the titular role while Peter recovers from an injury. The name and rights to Spider-Man have been purchased by the Beyond Corporation, which intends to make Ben into a corporate hero. The company fits Ben with a new suit and arranges for him to be trained by the Daughters of the Dragon. The new Spider-Man is already running a gauntlet of villains, including Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. The latter made a point to track Spider-Man down and pump him full of hallucinogenic drugs. Now, with Spidey’s mind being torn apart, Kraven makes an offer to Ben in a preview for Amazing Spider-Man #80, written by Cody Ziglar, with art by Michael Dowling, colors by Jesus Aburtov and Erick Arciniega, and letters by Joe Caramagna.

The preview opens with Spider-Man, struggling to maintain control of his sanity, facing a flame-headed Kraven. Rather than attempt to kill Spider-Man, Kraven tells Spider-Man that the hero’s “great awakening has begun.” Kraven implores him to “embrace” what Kraven is doing because it will make him stronger. Ben still resists and Kraven continues his mental assault on Spider-Man, wearing him down until he is nothing but a blank slate, devoid of identity. Kraven then tells him he will revert to his “truest, natural form.” The preview ends there, and readers must wait until December 1 to see how Spidey escapes Kraven’s clutches. Until then, Marvel has released some preview pages:

Since his return during the “Clone Saga” of the 1990s, Ben Reilly has struggled with his identity. As a clone of Spider-Man, he will always be regarded as an imitation of the original, no matter how hard he tries. At one point, Reilly actually thought he was the real Spider-Man, only to have that jerked away as well. Kraven’s attack was a stroke of genius, using drugs and mental warfare to strike at the heart of Ben Reilly’s insecurities. Spider-Man tries to fight back, but the villain has worn him down, reducing him to nothing so that Kraven can build him back up. The truly horrifying part is Kraven believes what he is doing is right, that he will help Spider-Man somehow become better.

Ben Reilly’s second stint as Spider-Man has gotten off to a shaky start, and it has only gotten worse with the arrival of Kraven the Hunter, dead set on a mission to make Spider-Man “better.”
