The Suicide Squad Secretly Just Made DCEU Harley Quinn More Like Batman

The Suicide Squad’s trailer secretly made the DC Extended Universe’s Harley Quinn more like Batman, continuing her character development from Birds of Prey. Since Harley’s Quinn’s DCEU debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, her character has undergone massive changes. By the time she reappears in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, she’s more of an antihero than a villain.

Harley Quinn’s first appearance set her up as a direct opponent of Batman, even showing her attempting to kill the masked vigilante. According to Amanda Waller, Batman was the one to capture Harley and lock her away in Belle Reeve. The film ends with Harley’s reunion with the Joker, presumably to cause chaos in Gotham City. Birds of Prey, on the other hand, is about Harley rediscovering who she is without the Joker. After breaking up with the Clown Prince of Crime, Harley is set adrift. She teams up with Cass and other female fighters, discovering she has a soft spot for people after all. At the end of the film, Harley recruits Cass as her apprentice and starts her own mercenary business, “Harley Quinn & Associate.”

The Suicide Squad trailer shows Harley is still willing to work as part of the team. She appears to form a close connection to members of the squad, touched that they are mounting a rescue mission for her. One telling shot in the trailer shows Harley’s rap sheet, which lists “vigilantism” as the first offense. The shot suggests she has become a Batman-like vigilante in her own right rather than playing her original role as a supervillain. Despite Harley’s apparent disdain for the crime-fighting Birds of Prey team — calling them “dorky little do-gooders” at the end of the movie — it seems she’s also taken to beating down bad guys when it suits her.

Harley is still a criminal, but her rap sheet suggests she now breaks rules in service of others rather than pursuing her own agenda. While working with the Joker, Harley was a true supervillain. Her goal was to assist the Joker in creating mayhem and challenging Batman, placing her in direct opposition to him and what he stands for.

However, as an independent mercenary, Harley Quinn is likely to take the jobs she can get, whether it’s for the good guys or the bad guys. One of Harley’s reliable characteristics is her unreliability. She is never predictable. Other charges on Harley’s rap sheet are kidnapping, extortion, destruction of property, attempted homicide, and possession of illegal weapons — all crimes she could have committed in pursuit of her own form of justice or while working toward her own ends. But the fact that the most recent charge shown is “vigilantism” suggests Harley is now more like Batman or ex-Detective Montoya than the Joker, adding even more intrigue to her role in The Suicide Squad.
