10 When you try to smile after getting your braces off

This meme is actually not necessarily about The Vampire Diaries, it just happens to use Elena Gilbert without teeth to emphasize its point. There is a popular trend people like to follow on the internet where they take a photo of an actor smiling with teeth and edit out their teeth.

It creates a creepy, gummy effect. It does help emphasize the caption however, that is what it feels like to cope with the pain after you get braces.

9 The face you make when you don’t get something you want

Like the aforementioned meme, this one doesn’t necessarily need to use Elena as the subject to explain the caption, but it happens to fit really well. What happens when you don’t get what you want? It can be supremely disappointing.

Also, Elena happens to have a funny cry face, and this particular scene in the meme is often talked about as one of the more humorous ones. It’s the perfect way to describe how we all feel when we don’t get what we want.

8 That awkward moment

Every single time the main group of characters attended a decade dance at Mystic Falls High School, something terrible happened. The Vampire Diaries became known for having fun school dances, particularly their decade dances, with about one per season.

But each decade dance tended to be the stage where a villain would attack. Seriously, every time. Yet despite their bad reputation, nothing stopped Elena and her friends from attending them.

7 Math exams are hard

Unless you’re extremely good at math, you have probably felt something very similar to what Elena felt in this scene. Although the quotes on the screencaps are not verbatim from the series, they’re befitting of the facial expressions she’s making.

In reality, the maker of this meme used photos of Elena when she was dealing with her turn into a vampire. But haven’t we all felt like our brain was breaking down while trying to solve an equation on a math exam?

6 Hi bird

If you read the books before watching the show, then you might know that Damon Salvatore supposedly had some special abilities. The series toyed with the idea in the beginning.

Damon was originally able to transform into a crow and keep an eye on things in town, particularly Elena. As the show progressed, this “special power” was nixed, or at least not acknowledged. But this moment from the pilot remains as a silent communication between the two, neither aware of what their future would hold.

5 Elena did it before Taylor Swift

Back in the fourth season, Elena turned her humanity off after struggling to come to terms with her brother Jeremy’s supposed death. In reality, Jeremy comes back later on in the show, but for a while, Elena is extremely traumatized, and the only thing she can do is flip her humanity switch.

During that time, she is completely callous when discussing her late brother, such as in this scene. Fans of Taylor Swift may recall a familiar moment from Taylor’s “Look What You Made Me Do” music video where she claims the old Taylor is dead.

4 Elena and Katherine are super similar

Elena Gilbert spends a great portion of the series pretending she is nothing like Katherine Pierce, the doppelganger that preceded her. To the acting credit of Nina Dobrev, neither Elena or Katherine is too similar in personality. It’s very easy to tell the characters apart, despite the fact they’re portrayed by the same actress.

However, it’s undeniable that Elena is actually more like Katherine than she would perhaps like to think. When Elena had her humanity turned off, she did several things that Katherine did, like walking around naked and killing people in public. Plus, they both fell in love with the Salvatore brothers.

3 Do you want to build a snowman?

This hilarious meme of Klaus Mikaelson and Elena Gilbert is a clever Frozen tie-in. The real scene in question happens in the fourth season when Klaus is unable to get into the Gilbert home, with the intent of terrorizing them.

Obviously, the funny part of this meme is the idea that Klaus would be outside of Elena’s house yelling, “do you want to build a snowman?” as if he was the Anna to Elena’s Elsa. Clearly, Elena is not happy about that possibility.

2 Nothing bad ever happens here

Whenever a character says something like “nothing bad ever happens here” you know that it’s a recipe for disaster. Famous last words, as some would say. We don’t find out that Elena and Damon originally met even before she and Stefan met until later in the series.

Damon compelled her not to remember. But when they do encounter one another, Elena tells Damon she’s not afraid of being alone in the dark because it’s Mystic Falls! Of course, we know that everything changes after that. It’s kind of like Damon took her sentiment as a challenge.

1 Is it always going to be Stefan?

The love triangle between Elena, Damon, and Stefan was the essential heart and backbone of the series across all eight seasons. Even when Elena wasn’t on the show, in the end, there was still a great deal of focus on the doppelganger’s relationship with the two brothers.

In the beginning, Elena confessed to Damon that it was always going to be Stefan, essentially breaking Damon’s heart. But Stelena fans realized later on that wasn’t true. Elena eventually falls in love with Damon too and even ends up with him at the end of the show. As Harry Potter screams here, “You liar!” is how many of the Stefan fans felt at the end of season eight.
