The CW’s The Vampire Diaries came after other great shows like Twilight, but it paved the way for others. Despite its success, fans have questions.

It is difficult to watch a supernatural film without comparing it to The Vampire Diaries. Though the series came after equally good mystical shows, like Twilight, it stands apart by being extremely relatable. One of the crucial players in The Vampire Diaries story are the witches. The witches have the ability to use magic and draw energy from nature, creating powerful forces that work either for or against other characters.

One of the oldest and most powerful witches in The Vampire Diaries came from the Bennett family. Other witch covens who time and again prove that they are forces to be reckoned with include members of the Gemini Coven. Although the witches of The Vampire Diaries displayed exemplary performances, they still left viewers asking a few questions.

10 Are All Witches Psychics?

Bonnie is a powerful witch from the Bennett family who has grown tremendously over the course of The Vampire Diaries, owing to her ability to adapt. Apart from magic, she has psychic powers. Being a psychic means that she can control people’s minds and she also has telepathic capabilities.

During a fight with Cade over Damon’s soul, Bonnie uses psychic telekinesis to beat him. Bonnie’s psychic abilities are seen numerous times in the show. This begs the question of whether all witches possess hidden psychic powers?

9 Creating Pocket Dimensions

When Enzo passes away, Bonnie is greatly distressed and emotionally traumatized. In her anguish, she creates a pocket dimension that appears to be an afterlife space. She then unintentionally draws Enzo’s soul into the space.

Was creating the pocket dimension a psychic reaction or a conception of her magic as a witch? If the answer is the latter, does that mean witches can create transcend dimensions?

8 Is The “Original” Original A Witch?

A thousand years before the Originals were turned into vampires, an ancient witch, known as Silas, took an immortality potion. He, thus, became the first immortal. This aside, since he was a witch before taking the potion, did he become an immortal witch or a vampire?

He is seen drinking blood as vampires do. He is also Stefan’s doppelgänger. Nonetheless, he cannot be classified as a vampire with certainty. Since he was a witch before acquiring his immortality, is he not just an immortal witch?

7 Josie And Lizzie’s Siphoning Powers

Josie and Lizzie are Alaric and Josette’s daughters. The two witches are extremely powerful, especially when they work together. As kids, they help Bonnie escape a fire, break a spell that had Enzo and Damon endangered, and create the prison world that houses their uncle, Kai.

They also possess incredible siphoning abilities, meaning they can tap magic from other individuals, happenings, and places. Their siphoning powers beg the question of why they were not used to siphon Elena’s sleeping spell. Why did they not even come up as solutions for the sleeping spell binding Elena and Bonnie?

6 A Life For A Life

In The Vampire Diaries, witches seem to have to pay the ultimate price when conducting difficult spells. When Sheila, Bonnie’s grandmother, and Bonnie execute a spell to open the tomb that Katherine is in, the spell uses up so much of their power that Sheila collapses dead.

The death of Bonnie’s grandmother makes viewers wonder whether the witches of The Vampire Diaries are powerful enough. How come the witches in the spin-off, The Originals, do not die when performing powerful spells?

5 Self-doubt And Losing Powers

When witches are filled with self-doubt and emotional distress, they typically lose their powers. However, this is not always the case for Bonnie. Though she is seen losing her powers when Enzo dies due to her sorrow and anguish, she doubts herself a lot later on, but still gets to keep her magic.

Despite being a very powerful witch, she always indicates that she cannot do it or she is not powerful enough whenever she is asked for help. She then proceeds to perform the spell effortlessly. Does this mean that self-doubt does not always take away a witch’s powers?

4 Witches Vs Vampires

The relationship between witches and vampires has always posed a conundrum in The Vampire Diaries. The ancient witches, Qetsiyah, Amara, and Silas, were travelers hunting down the Originals. Esther Mikaelson too, after regretting placing the vampire curse on her children, vows to rectify her mistake by obliterating all vampires.

Kai also places a sleeping spell on Elena, which puts her to sleep for six years. Nonetheless, viewers are treated to a beautiful witch-vampire relationship through Bonnie and Elena, who are best friends. Vampires also depend on witches for daylight rings. These contrasting relationships leave viewers wondering whether witches are naturally enemies or friends of vampires.

3 Gate To The Afterlife

Bonnie momentarily acts as a conduit, or anchor, for supernatural creatures who are moving to the afterlife. She is able to help them move swiftly to the other side after they die.

Nevertheless, after Katherine dies in season five, she passes through Bonnie to enter the afterlife without Bonnie noticing. This makes one wonder why the powerful witch did not realize that Katherine had passed through her.

2 The Locator Spell

At some point in The Vampire Diaries, Bonnie decides to look for her mother. Instead of simply using her locator spell to find her, Bonnie is seen looking through the information of every Abby Bennett in the area.

Why would she not just use her locater spell to find her?

1 Breaking The Sleeping Spell

When Kai, an extremely powerful witch who was banished from the Gemini Coven, places a sleeping curse on Elena, it feels like the end for her. The spell indicates that when Bonnie is alive, Elena sleeps, and when Elena is awake, Bonnie dies.

Since Bonnie does not want to die, she works out a way to break the spell. Although what Bonnie does works, viewers do not get to see Bonnie in action. The question of how Bonnie halted Kai’s witchcraft will always linger on viewer’s minds. It also leaves the question of whether the Bennet generation was really a generation of powerful witches.
