The characters in The Vampire Diaries are morally grey at the least due to their animalistic nature as supernatural creatures. There isn’t a single person who’s never crossed some sort of line, and no matter how much they try to fight the truth, no one in the series is innocent.

It’s often difficult to decide who to root for on the show, but the writers make it clear which characters are supposed to be heroes and which are supposed to be villains. But an antagonist can be more intriguing than a protagonist, and viewers often prefer to watch a villain develop, rather than a hero regress.

8 Hated: Alaric Saltzman

During the first season of the show, there was no reason to dislike Alaric. He came to town to kill the vampire who had murdered his wife but ended up becoming his best friend instead. Alaric and Damon’s bromance was beloved by many, and it kept Alaric’s character relevant for seasons.

But once he dies and comes back from the dead, Alaric loses all the aspects that made him interesting and feels more like a waste of screentime. His starring role in Legacies isn’t something that many viewers cared much about.

7 Loved: Silas

Viewers didn’t get to know Silas until he locked Stefan in a coffin and threw him in the bottom of Steven’s Quarry. His bad Stefan impersonation was comical, but he really began to shine when the truth about his identity was out in the open.

Silas had a nonchalant attitude about everything, and he would have a friendly conversation with someone while he was in the middle of killing them. His one-liners were hilarious, and even though they looked the same, Silas was Stefan’s polar opposite.

6 Hated: Tyler Lockwood

Tyler started off the series as a bully and he never really stopped being one. He did have some character development that made him more tolerable during Seasons 2 and 3 but still felt like the stereotypical jock character deep down.

While his relationship with Caroline started off strong, he let his hatred for Klaus and the surprising friendship between Klaus and Caroline send them on a downward spiral. He chose revenge over the girl he claimed to love, and his actions from that point on were fueled by anger.

5 Loved: Katherine Pierce

Katherine Pierce is one of the most beloved characters in the history of The Vampire Diaries. A large majority of fans prefer her over her doppelgänger Elena, and her wit mixed with 500 years of knowledge made her a standout.

Katherine was always one step ahead of her enemies, and she was determined to survive no matter the cost to others. But sometimes Katherine’s humanity would find its way in, and it made her an even more complex character than she was originally presented as.

4 Hated: Matt Donavan

The Vampire Diaries 4 Heroes Fans Hated (& 4 Villains They Loved)

There was a purpose to Matt’s character during the first couple seasons of The Vampire Diaries, but he became increasingly pointless as the series went on. His hatred of vampires was understandable to an extent, but his treatment of his friends was unacceptable.

Matt pretended to be righteous when really, he was rude and judgmental. There was no reason to be invested in him, and Matt’s storylines in the later seasons were either boring or just plain bad.

3 Loved: Klaus Mikaelson

The Mikaelsons were so beloved by the audience that The CW created the Originals spinoff. Elijah and Rebekah had quite a following, but Klaus is the most popular family member by far. Klaus was the oldest vampire in the history of time and was introduced as the most powerful opponent the characters had ever faced.

Klaus is known for his sass, fancy dinner parties, and the occasional massacre. In a show where vampires treat killing like a hobby, Klaus fits in quite well. He had significant character development, partially due to his romance with Caroline, but became a changed man after his daughter, Hope, was born in The Originals.

2 Hated: Elena Gilbert

While Stefan and Damon both felt that Elena was the love of their lives, many fans felt the exact opposite. She was originally portrayed as a Mary Sue, which was off-putting for many viewers, and her mere existence was often the cause of death and bodily harm to her friends and family.

Elena was treated as if she suffered the most loss out of everyone when she was arguably better off than several of the characters. She also had a tendency to act superior to those around her, and her condescending attitude was easy to get fed up with.

1 Loved: Kai Parker

The Vampire Diaries 4 Heroes Fans Hated (& 4 Villains They Loved)

Kai Parker might have been a heartless serial killer, but he was also one of the funniest characters to ever exist in The Vampire Diaries universe. Fans were overjoyed when Chris Wood temporarily reprised his role in Legacies and were saddened when the show killed him off.

Despite being a murderer, Kai also has a need to be liked, and the juxtaposition of the two things provided a great opportunity for humor. When he absorbs his brother’s powers in the merge, he also becomes attuned to his feelings, and his quest to earn Bonnie’s forgiveness is a hilarious aspect of the season.
