The Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf both heavily feature werewolves in their narrative, but how do their werewolves compare?

Werewolves play an essential role in The Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf. Werewolves become vital in Mystic Falls during the second season with the arrival of Katherine Pierce as she tries to attain the moonstone for Original Vampire, Klaus Mikaelson. Klaus wishes to break the curse placed upon him to activate his werewolf side. Afterward, werewolves continue to play a significant role in the ongoing saga of Mystic Falls.
Meanwhile, in Beacon Hills, werewolves are the central creature. Scott’s unexpected transformation leads Scott, Stiles, and their friends into the supernatural territory, and they build bonds, strengthening their pack that contains more than just werewolves.
10 Hybrids
Both shows focus on a variety of supernatural creatures. But, there are differences in the types of hybrids that exist. Klaus Mikaelson was the first of his kind; a werewolf turned vampire.
Such abilities made Klaus nearly indestructible. Klaus’s blood worked as a cure for vampires against a werewolf bite. On Teen Wolf, no character was considered a hybrid. The closest the series got was when Jackson’s body rejected the werewolf bite, mutating Jackson into a Kanima instead.
9 The Bite
On The Vampire Diaries, a werewolf bite is a dangerous weapon. A bite from a werewolf can kill a vampire, but that was the extent a werewolf bite could go. On Teen Wolf, a bite from a werewolf could transform a human into a werewolf. In the pilot of Teen Wolf, Scott is bitten by a werewolf and later turns into one.
But it is not a guarantee. If a person is bitten by a werewolf and doesn’t transform into one, they will die. The cases where characters didn’t turn or die from a werewolf bite were in the case of Jackson, who turned into a Kanima, and Lydia, when the bite unleashed her Banshee abilities.
8 The Curse
Tyler Lockwood lives a relatively ordinary life in Mystic Falls until his uncle shows up and changes everything he knows. With his uncle around, Tyler discovers the werewolf gene that exists in his family. But, a person only transforms into a werewolf after they have killed another person.
Such a rule doesn’t exist in Teen Wolf. While things do affect werewolves, if they kill others, it does not affect their ability to transform or give them the chance to become their wolf form.
7 True Alpha
What it takes to be the leader of a pack is explored more in The Originals than in The Vampire Diaries, but the idea of a True Alpha is very significant in Teen Wolf.
Scott McCall had primarily been a Beta after getting bitten by Peter and learning from Derek. But, the content of Scott’s character allows him to rise without killing another Alpha. Instead, by making choices true to himself, and not killing others, Scott becomes a True Alpha.
6 Breaking Every Bone In Your Body
Tyler Lockwood makes a big deal about the transformation process into being a werewolf. It is shown to be an excruciating process and takes several hours to complete the transformation after the full moon. The pain is part of why Tyler is sired to Klaus after turning into a Hybrid, because he can transform at will without the pain that comes with it.
On Teen Wolf, transitioning into a wolf is still shown to be a painful process, but once gaining control, not all the werewolves go through a complete transformation during the full moon.
5 Born With Abilities
It takes killing a person to activate the werewolf gene in The Vampire Diaries, but Teen Wolf shows that werewolves are born with their abilities, and have no need to activate those powers. Peter and Derek come from a family of werewolves, unlike Scott, who only gained those powers after getting bitten.
The werewolves in Beacon Hills also have a specific weakness to Mountain Ash and wolfsbane. In Mystic Falls and New Orleans, it is only wolfsbane that is used as one of the most substantial weapons against werewolves.
4 Sire Bond
This is only really seen with Klaus’s hybrids, but it is still a notable difference. Tyler and several other newly turned hybrids have a desire to help Klaus because they are grateful his actions ended their painful transformations. While that could be due to their vampire connection; it is not explored more.
Scott McCall does feel a pull to his Alpha while in wolf form, but as a human, Scott is in control of his actions. However, early in Scott’s transition, Peter can force Scott to transform.
3 Pack Dynamics
One notable difference between the two worlds is how a pack is distinguished. In The Vampire Diaries, a pack is not an essential part of being a werewolf. Tyler has friends, but not a specific pack he runs with. In The Originals, packs are central and significant to the power struggles in New Orleans. Hayley’s role as Hope’s mother and part of the Crescent Pack works well for Klaus.
But, in Teen Wolf, the packs are essential. Derek makes it clear to Scott that a werewolf is more robust with a pack. In addition to having more strength, it also shows that an Omega werewolf is weaker, always in danger, and more likely to get caught by werewolf hunters.
2 Eye Color
There is nothing so peculiar about the werewolves on The Vampire Diaries regarding appearance.
But, Teen Wolf devotes time to explaining why some werewolves have different eye colors than others. Derek Hale’s eyes are blue, which is due to him having killed an innocent. Scott’s eyes as a Beta had been gold. An Alpha’s eyes are red. The difference between eye colors in wolf form does a lot to suggest details or hints into the character’s history.
1 Creation Of The Species
In both universes, werewolves have existed for centuries. But, each world has a different version of how werewolves came to be. When The Originals finally revealed how werewolves were created, it came from the story of a powerful and angry witch.
As revenge for her death, the Hollow cursed the members of her tribe who were responsible. Her actions invented the seven werewolf bloodlines and eventually caused the trigger to activate the werewolf gene. While characters have theories in Teen Wolf about how werewolves came to be, they never go back in time to show them occurring.
