The Walking Dead 5 Ways Michonne Is Different In The Comics (& 5 Shes The Same)

There are certain characters who will always be considered as the most integral to The Walking Dead, with Michonne being one of them. Michonne was introduced as a katana-wielding survivor who eventually became part of the group right until the end of the series.

Of course, the TV series has changed course from the source material, meaning Michonne has taken up quite a lot of storylines that were originally Andrea’s, and some aspects were eliminated. Still, there are several things like Michonne’s mannerisms and particular arcs that have been retained to make her similar to the comics’ version of the character.

10 Different: Comics’ Michonne Has Two Biological Daughters

In the TV series, Judith has claimed Michonne to be her mother and the latter had raised the child as her own. However, the comics’ Michonne had two biological children whom she had been attempting to find right from her debut appearance.

She did end up finding her daughter Elodie, who was revealed to have been living in the Commonwealth in Issue #176, while her other daughter Colette was revealed to have died. In fact, finding Elodie turned out to be the closure of Michonne’s arc as she regained her life’s purpose.

9 Same: The Reliance On The Katana

The most notable feature about Michonne from her debut was her use of the katana. She’s offed many villains with this weapon and has relied on it so much that it feels out of place seeing her without it.

This has been the same in both the comics and TV series, with both mediums showing Michonne’s identity as a fighter to be connected to the katana. Along with that, Michonne hasn’t used any other weapons due to how well-versed she’s become with the sword.

8 Different: Comics’ Michonne’s Main Love Interest Was Ezekiel

There are many relationships that didn’t see the light of day in the transition from the comics to the TV series. One of the major ones was Michonne’s relationship with Ezekiel.

In the comics, Michonne took a liking toward Ezekiel because of his positive outlook, something she didn’t share at the time. Eventually, the two gave in to their attraction and began a long relationship. However, they were on the rocks for a while after the time skip and they never got to reconcile due to Ezekiel’s death at the hands of Alpha.

7 Same: Her Trauma At Losing Her Child

While in the show, Michonne’s child died without a doubt, she carried the same trauma that her comic book version did. Her regret at choosing to trust her partner with their child haunted Michonne, along with her attempts to keep her motherly instincts at bay.

Much as in the source material, Michonne learned to live with the knowledge that her child was there no more and eventually moved on. This was part of her character’s arc of accepting the apocalyptic reality she was in.

6 Different: Comics’ Michonne Was A Lawyer

TV Michonne’s past has never been detailed further from her days as a mother, although it’s implied that she may have been an art major and a social worker. This was different from the comics’ Michonne, who was confirmed to have been a lawyer.

Michonne’s legal background became useful in the story, as the final issue of the series showed her to have become the judge of the Commonwealth and she used this influence to acquit Carl Grimes.

5 Same: Her Sense Of Loyalty Towards Her Friends

While Michonne never had a friendship as strong as the one Rick and Daryl enjoyed, she did have established friendships she could rely on. The comics’ Michonne channeled her loneliness into loyalty for her friends as appreciation for them accepting her.

Michonne in the TV series started off having good friendships with Andrea, Carl, and Rick before she too became loyal to the group as a whole. It’s this loyalty that motivated her to stay in Alexandria to fight for the ones she believed in.

4 Different: Comics’ Michonne Left The Group Due To Her Emotional State

The time skip played out in both the comics and TV series, with a notable difference being the absence of Michonne. Her TV counterpart became one of the leaders of Alexandria and carried the community after the disappearance of Rick.

On the other hand, the comics’ Michonne was the one to leave the group and head off to deal with all the deaths in the Savior war, along with her estrangement from Ezekiel. While she didn’t abandon the group as she informed others of her departure, there’s a big difference between the two Michonnes during the time skip.

3 Same: Her Style And Appearance

Michonne’s general appearance for the TV series is lifted from the comics, from her hairstyle to her dressing sense. The live-action version retained Michonne’s liking for vests and jeans, as she dressed unlike everyone else.

Even Michonne’s fighting stance is the same in both incarnations, having the tendency to raise the katana over her head and point it toward the direction of danger. The finishing touch of her bandana was also adapted into the TV series.

2 Different: Comics’ Michonne Didn’t Have A Relationship With Judith

Rick being the father of Judith was a change from the comics, although it affected Michonne as well. That’s because she ended up being Judith’s mother in this interpretation, which was far from the case in the comics, where Michonne never even knew the child.

The comics’ Judith had died as a baby, so never got to have a relationship with Michonne. The TV series version has made Judith be Michonne’s top priority, seen best during the time skip where Michonne had killed her former best friend to save Judith’s life.

1 Same: Her Development From An Outsider Into A Treasured Member Of The Group

Upon her introduction, Michonne was far from an ally to the group. Her presence with two zombies shackled to her side wasn’t an inviting sight and it took a while for her to bond with the others. After she did gain their trust, Michonne became a valuable member of Rick’s group.

In the show, Michonne was also kept as an outsider by Rick, who had been having delusional thoughts of talking with Lori until he realized Michonne understood him. This was similar to the comics, in which Michonne revealed the loss of her own family as a way to bridge the gap with Rick.
