The Walking Dead A Key Friendship Reaches a Breaking Point

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 10, Episode 18, “Find Me,” which aired Sunday on AMC.

While last week’s episode of The Walking Dead filled in Maggie’s time away from Hilltop, Season 10, Episode 18, “Find Me,” delivers a Carol and Daryl-centric storyline. Thanks to Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus’ innate chemistry, the episode teases the promising possibilities of AMC’s forthcoming Carol and Daryl spin-off series. However, as the episode progresses, Carol’s past reckless pursuit of Alpha and her horde dig up painful memories for Daryl that puts their longstanding friendship to the test.

Carol and Daryl are the only two remaining original characters on the show, and their relationship dates back to Season 1 of The Walking Dead. Together, they’ve navigated their fair share of heartache. Both loners at their core, Carol and Daryl tend to wander off alone to sort through their problems. Despite this, they always return to each other with forgiveness and open arms. The pattern has become a familiar one for Walking Dead fans, until recently when Carol’s actions ultimately resulted in a cave-in that Daryl believes led to the death of Connie.

The tension between Carol and Daryl began shortly after Alpha killed Carol’s son, Henry, at the end of Season 9. Carol became obsessed with vengeance, and her need to destroy Alpha resulted in erratic behavior that put the group and her own life in jeopardy. Although the audience knows Connie is still alive, her fate was in question for most of Season 10 after Carol’s hasty chase after Alpha led to a cave-in that buried Connie. Considering Daryl continuously warned Carol to think about the group instead of herself, this left him distraught and angry with her. Although he initially forgave Carol, “Find Me” proves he’s still bitter and resentful.

The latest episode reveals Daryl’s first on-screen romance via flashback. Daryl recounts the story of his relationship with Leah to Carol after they stumble upon Leah’s former cabin on a hunting trip. While searching for Rick by the river, Daryl met Leah, Dog’s previous owner, but their relationship ended after she gave Daryl an ultimatum, asking him to choose either looking for Rick, his people or her. When he returns to her cabin, Leah is gone and her fate is still unknown.

Carol comforts Daryl by reminding him the loss of Leah, Rick and Connie isn’t his fault. However, the mention of Connie’s name causes him to snap, “No, that’s on you.” Carol apologizes for Connie but defends her decision to go after Alpha for killing Henry. Daryl tells Carol that she shouldn’t have come hunting with him, and he should have let her get back on the boat in Oceanside when she wanted to at the beginning of Season 10. He accuses her of running from her guilt as her actions essentially resulted in the Whisperers’ return attack on Alexandria. Carol denies running. Instead, she calls out Daryl for his desire to save everybody while also reminding him she doesn’t need a savior or a martyr, just a friend.

Daryl tells her that “friends don’t have the same damn conversation over and over again,” and he’s sick of it. Carol ends their argument by declaring, “I was right. Our luck’s run out, you and me.” The episode concludes with the emotional cliffhanger of a conversation that leaves many questions about the status of Carol and Daryl’s longstanding friendship.

This argument comes just after Carol and Daryl appeared to be inching towards a possible romance. Although the duo’s relationship has always generated speculation in The Walking Dead fandom, Season 10 showcased some longing looks between the two and even featured Carol dreaming of a life with Daryl and Henry instead of her past flame, Ezekiel. While “Caryl” shippers may be momentarily disheartened, Carol and Daryl’s relationship will likely be repaired given their upcoming spin-off.

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews. The series airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
