Since his days on Saturday Night Live, David Spade has amassed quite an impressive resume in the comedy world. Quite a lot of his work in film has been done with SNL costars, from the late and lamented Chris Farley to actor-turned-producer Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions.
He frequently plays the straight man in buddy comedies, a role his acerbic wit is perfectly suited for- although he isn’t without the occasional foray into the comedic lead himself. In a nearly three-and-a-half decade career, he’s understandably had some flops, but there are just as many movies that stand out as comedy genius.
10 Tommy Boy (1995)
Starring Chris Farley as the titular good-natured but somewhat-dimwitted son of a straight-laced businessman who owned an auto parts factory, Tommy Boy featured David Spade as his father’s incredibly uptight assistant, Richard.
After his father’s sudden death, Tommy Boy sets out on a cross-country trip with Richard in an attempt to sell enough brake pads to save the business from foreclosure by the bank.
9 Black Sheep (1996)
A year after Tommy Boy, Spade again shared the screen with Farley in Black Sheep. Much like Tommy Boy, Farley was the somewhat embarrassing family member who could make or break his family’s fortunes- his brother is campaigning for governor.
This time, Spade features as a campaign aide who must help Farley’s Mike campaign for his brother all while trying to keep the sweet oddball from making the whole campaign blow up.
8 The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
The Emperor’s New Groove was one of a line of Disney films that came out directly after the films of the Disney renaissance but before the slump of the 2000s. Spade stars as Kuzco, the young and selfish emperor of the Incan Empire- although he spends most of the film a talking llama.
Co-starring John Goodman, Eartha Kitt, and Patrick Warburton, it’s a fun romp that’s unlike anything else Disney has ever made.
7 Joe Dirt (2001)
2001’s Joe Dirt shows the life of the titular janitor as he tells the story of his life- abandoned at the Grand Canyon and forced to forever wear a mullet wig because the top of his skull never quite grew in.
He spends his life searching for his parents until he hits a dead end and gives up. After he tells his story on the radio, he becomes a sensation and reunites with his family, only to find out they only came back to use him.
6 Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003)
As the titular character, Spade plays a washed-up loser who hasn’t had much going on for him since his acting career ended when he was six. After a conversation with another former child star, he convinces himself that a part in an upcoming Rob Reiner movie is his path back to success.
Chock full of actual former child stars, it’s one mishap after another as Dickie tries every trick he knows to land the part.
5 The Benchwarmers (2006)
Also starring Rob Schneider and Jon Heder, Spade plays one of a dorky trio who had wished since they were kids that they were more athletic than they were, and as a result never got to play baseball.
They meet a kid, who along with the rest of his Little League team, is bullied by the more athletic kids from other local teams. They take part in a plan to teach the bullies that what they’re doing is wrong by, for some reason, playing baseball as adults against children.
4 Grown Ups (2010)
Grown Ups is a 2010 film (and a typical Happy Madison Production) with an ensemble cast featuring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Spade, and Rob Schneider as five childhood friends who all gather again as adults to mourn the death of their junior high basketball coach.
They all use the time at the lake house they’ve gathered at to right some of the many things they feel have gone wrong in their lives.
3 The Do-Over (2016)
A Netflix Original as part of the same deal with Happy Madison that brought us The Wrong Missy, The Do-Over is a buddy comedy co-starring Spade and Sandler. Spade is Charlie, a bank manager who meets his old friend Max at a high school reunion, and they spend the weekend together.
Max tells Charlie he’s now an FBI agent, only for this to turn out to be a lie after he blows up the yacht and tells Charlies it’s so they can start new lives. Their new identities seem to have been involved in some criminal problems, and they have to find out what’s going on before they’re killed for real.
2 Warning Shot (2018)
The lone film on the list that isn’t a comedy, Warning Shot is the incredibly rare foray Spade has made into drama.
He plays Bobby, the grandson of the owner of a water company, who wants to gain control of the water rights on an old farm to prove to his grandfather that he can run the company. The toughs he hired to bully the owners quickly spiral out of control in the situation, and things go completely awry before Bobby shows up to take control.
1 The Wrong Missy (2020)
Part of an ongoing deal between Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and streaming giant Netflix, The Wrong Missy co-stars Nick Swardson, Jackie Sandler, and Lauren Lapkus as the title character.
After a failed date with the out of control Missy, Spade’s Tim meets a beauty queen with the same name in an airport. Following a texting mixup, Tim spends the weekend of a corporate retreat with the wrong one and must keep her from costing him his job at a Portland bank.
