Before he hit the big time, Vin Diesel had a gig selling Street Sharks toys – here’s the adorkable video proof. As the star of the uber-successful Fast & Furious franchise and the man behind the voice of Groot in the MCU, Vin Diesel is a household name these days but it wasn’t always that way. Back before he got a foothold in the movie industry – before he landed a breakout role as doomed soldier Caparzo in Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic Saving Private Ryan – Diesel was a jobbing actor like any other, taking on work where he could find it.

While still in his teens, Vin Diesel had a job working as a bouncer at various nightclubs in New York City including the legendary Tunnel, where members of the infamous Club Kids would party in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He also had a gig as a telemarketer selling light bulbs to supplement the off-Broadway roles he got and once even turned his hand to breakdancing and rapping, which resulted in this wonderful instructional video and a recording session that makes it obvious why acting was a better path for Vin Diesel than hip hop.

By the time the 1990s rolled around, Vin Diesel’s movie career was just getting started. He’d landed his first film role – albeit an uncredited, blink-and-you’ll miss it part – as a hospital orderly in Oscar-nominated drama Awakenings starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. Diesel was also busy working on his self-funded short film Multi-Facial, a semi-autobiographical project he also starred in that was later screened at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. He still didn’t shy away from taking on odd jobs as he gradually made a name for himself, like the time he spent hawking Street Sharks toys in 1994.

For those not in the know, Street Sharks was an animated series that ran for three seasons between 1994 and 1997 and followed the crime-fighting adventures of a group of teenaged half-human, half-shark mutants. Mattel released a line of Street Sharks toy action figures in conjunction with the animated show, which is exactly what a leather-vested Vin Diesel is enthusiastically flogging in the video above.

Luckily for Vin Diesel, he didn’t have to rely on his side gig selling Street Shark toys for long. Soon after Diesel was busy writing, directing and starring in his first feature-length movie Strays and before long Steven Spielberg – impressed by his earlier short film Multi-Facial – asked him to be in Saving Private Ryan. After that, roles in movies like Boiler Room, Pitch Black and The Fast And The Furious came flooding in and the rest – as they say – is history, along with his brief stint hawking Street Sharks action figures.
