Indie game My Friend Pedro shows what would happen if Wade Wilson was given the video game treatment and Deadpool got its own console spinoff. After appearing in largely forgettable games like X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, as a downloadable costume for LittleBigPlanet, and in High Moon’s Deadpool: The Game, it’s about time the Merc With a Mouth really got his time to shine in the gaming world.

While My Friend Pedro may not be an official tie-in to celebrate David Leitch’s Deadpool 2, a costumed ninja leaping around in slo-mo and blasting through waves of enemies conjures up images of Fox’s two blockbusters. Making waves at E3 2018, My Friend Pedro is coming to both PC and Nintendo Switch in early 2019 and will be an unusually bloodthirsty title compared to most of the Switch’s family-friendly offerings.

The first trailer for My Friend Pedro (watch it above) shows a bright-eyed assassin pirouetting through the air and using a variety of environmental mechanics to take down targets. Narrated by Pedro – an adorable talking banana – the 2D side-scroller is the brainchild of Victor Agren and his one-man studio DeadToast. Whether using machine guns or smaller pistols, seven weapons will be available for dual-wield and to make the most of the game’s dual-aim abilities. Sliding down walls or riding skateboards to get into a prime position, Pedro will then throw praise at screens when players hit that all-important spot and pull off that critical kill.

Although the trailer shows off a beautiful dance of fancy moves and clever ways to shoot through villains, My Friend Pedro can just as easily be played by slowly opening doors and cautiously taking headshots – but where would be the fun in that? Cleverly designed for the 21st Century, Agren’s game also includes a similar feature to Overwatch’s “play of the game” at the end of the level. As well as reliving their best kills, players can then download the highlights as a perfectly-shareable GIF.

Playing like a suped-up version of Hotline Miami, My Friend Pedro looks like one to watch in terms of violence, playability, and cute factor alone. That being said, it is hard to escape the Deadpool comparisons in the game’s trailer. With a fast-paced scene aboard a motorbike that echoes Deadpool 2’s Juggernaut chase, it looks like Fox has dropped the ball by not pulling My Friend Pedro under its own umbrella. Here’s an idea, make the My Friend Pedro sequel an official partner for the upcoming X-Force movie, which will feature Deadpool
