Thor 4s Mjolnir Hint Is Way Better Than A Multiverse Lady Thor

Set details from Thor: Love and Thunder hint at details surrounding Mjolnir’s return to the MCU, and it’s way more interesting than the Multiverse’s Lady Thor theory. Set to be the sixth feature film installment in Phase 4, production for the next Thor movie is underway in Australia. Directed by Taika Waititi, Love and Thunder will feature Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the God of Thunder. More notably, the upcoming movie heavily focuses on Natalie Portman’s reentry into the cinematic universe as Jane Foster before taking on the role of Lady Thor.

Portman made her MCU debut in 2011’s Thor as the astrophysicist who first encountered the Asgardian native when he was exiled to Earth. With the help of her team comprised of Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis, Jane assisted Thor in his mission to return to Asgard. As the Asgardian’s love interest, Jane served as a key figure in Thor: The Dark World when she inadvertently became possessed by the Reality Stone. After she was taken to Asgard for help, Jane became a pivotal aspect in Thor’s defeat of Malekith and the Dark Elves. Thor remained on Earth to be with Jane until she broke off the relationship to focus her groundbreaking career.

Despite appearing in Avengers: Endgame through Thor and Rocket’s travels to an alternate 2013, Jane has been absent since her role in The Dark World. Not only is Portman returning in a prominent part, but Jane will take on Thor’s powers while following the character’s Mighty Thor arc from the comics. In doing so, Jane will be deemed worthy enough to wield Mjolnir, Thor’s legendary hammer. Seeing as Thor’s original weapon was destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, it’s unclear how Jane gets her hands on Mjolnir. Though some have claimed the explanation could be linked to the Multiverse, new Love and Thunder set photos and videos hint that the MCU’s primary Jane will gain powers for the broken hammer. The set footage reveals Jane experiencing a reaction after encountering a memorial for Odin with the pieces of Mjolnir nearby. Based on the video, Love and Thunder is implying Jane transforms into Mighty Thor from the shards of the mystical hammer.

Thor 4 Needs A Satisfying Jane Twist That Doesn’t Include The Multiverse

Even before the Love and Thunder set reveal, fans have been heavily speculating how Mjolnir returns in the new Thor movie. One belief focused on the Multiverse, which is expected to be a major focus of the MCU’s Phase 4. While some suggested Thor’s hammer in the forthcoming film will be from another universe, others took it a step farther, positing Jane’s portrayal as Mighty Thor will stem from a Multiverse version of Portman’s character. Rather than transform the Jane viewers became familiar with, the theory suggests Mighty Thor will be an entirely new character.

With the movie still over a year away, anything is still possible in terms of twists and reveals. That said, the set footage is compelling, considering the apparent focus on taking Jane’s character to an unexplored level. The notion of giving the MCU’s original Jane a chance to evolve into Mighty Thor sounds significantly better than using the Multiverse path. This method gives the MCU and Thor: Love and Thunder a way to rewrite Portman’s character after gaining a lukewarm reception in the same way WandaVision redeemed Darcy. Making Jane worthy enough to wield Mjolnir as she embarks on the next chapter of her arc is a welcomed evolution of the character and one that could turn Portman’s character into a new fan-favorite.
