Tiger King Jeff Lowe Says He Didnt Set Joe Exotic Up

The Netflix docuseries Tiger King suggests Jeff Lowe set up Joe Exotic, who is currently serving time in prison for a litany of charges — including attempting to orchestrate the murder of big cat activist Carole Baskin. However, in the after show special hosted by Joel McHale, titled “The Tiger King and I,” Jeff Lowe sets the record straight, denying allegations that he set up Exotic as a ploy to take over the zoo — a denial that’s somewhat undercut by his smug message to Exotic: “gotcha.”

Tiger King is a Netflix docuseries that follows the unbelievable story of Joe Exotic, the former owner-operator of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Audiences can’t seem to get enough of the self-described “Tiger King,” a larger-than-life figure whose questionable morals are overshadowed by his bizarre charisma and cartoonish antics.

Since Netflix released Tiger King on March 20, 2020, the true crime docuseries has taken the internet by storm. In the short time since its debut, Tiger King has already surpassed the majority of Netflix’s original programming, and according to Nielsen estimates, Tiger King is one of Netflix’s most popular original shows. The immense popularity resulted in Netflix quickly producing episode 8, a bonus after show in which McHale interviews some of the key figures from the docuseries. When asked about the theories suggesting that he scammed Exotic, Lowe — unsurprisingly — was quick to deny the allegations, asserting that Exotic’s circumstance was the product of his own making.

Jeff Lowe’s Denial in The Tiger King and I

Despite his statements attempting to clear his name, Jeff Lowe does not come away from “The Tiger King and I” looking innocent. The zoo operator draws suspicion on himself by seeming to brag about his involvement in Exotic’s incarceration, stating “[Exotic’s] where he belongs and I would probably just tell him, you know, “Gotcha.” Lowe goes on to boast:

The USDA tried to take him down. PETA has tried to take him down. Humane Society tried to take [down] — Carole Baskin spent $2.5 million trying to take him down. And we’re the ones who did it.

Lowe may say he didn’t set up Joe Exotic for the murder-for-hire bust with the FBI, but he certainly seems to be taking credit for Exotic’s situation, whether he’s aware of it or not. Jeff Lowe and his wife Lauren Lowe are noncommittal about returning if Netflix orders another set of episodes for Tiger King — regardless, it’s safe to assume they’ll continue to be part of the conversation until things are settled for good.
