There are tons of creatures and characters in Avatar and Legend of Korra, and some of these creatures are incredibly cute.

The show Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel The Legend of Korra feature some of the best world-building, character development, and amazingly detailed animation of any television show, for adults and children alike. One of the more subtle ways the shows give their world depth is through dozens of unique “hybrid animal” designs.
From hippo cows to koala otters, almost every creature depicted in the Avatar series is some imaginative mix between two real-world animals. The results are sometimes meant to be scary (catgators, buzzard wasps), but often they are simply adorable. It’s impossible to highlight all the cute creatures in the show, so here are ten animals featured prominently in the Avatar universe, ranked by their cuteness.
10 Badgermole
The badgermole is both kind of cute and an incredibly powerful spirit. In the Avatar series, badgermoles are considered to be the first earth benders and taught the art of earth bending to humans. They are blind and have badger markings but mole-like behavior, moving through subterranean tunnels with their bending.
Badgermoles help the blind Toph Beifong hone her earth bending after she runs away from home. They also follow the Earth Prince Wu’s singing in Korra’s story to help save Republic City.
9 Cat Owl
The cat owl is a creature that appears briefly in the Avatar series but is undeniably cute. With the head and tail of a cat on the body of an owl, cat owls can be found as pets on sale in the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se but also perched on branches in the wild.
The Chinese Mandarin word for “owl” also happens to literally translate to “cat-head hawk,” so the combination of feline face and bird wings makes a lot of sense for the Avatar series’ Asian-inspired anime aesthetics.
8 Flying Lemur
One of the creatures unique to the Air Nomads, the winged lemur in Avatar seems to be a mix of a Madagascar ringed-tailed lemur and a bat or flying squirrel. The most famous lemur in the show, Momo (the Japanese word for “peach”), was originally considered to be the last of his kind.
Aang finds Momo when he visits the desecrated air temple and learns the Fire Nation committed genocide on the Air Nomads. While Momo appears to be able to comprehend Aang and his companions, the episode “The Blue Spirit” revealed he mostly hears humans talking in gibberish.
7 An Actual Bear
During Aang’s journey, he meets Earth King Kuei and his favorite bear named Bosco. Bosco is not a platypus bear or an armadillo bear, both of which exist in the show. He’s just an incredibly rare (in this world) regular brown bear.
Bosco is definitely a top tier character in his own right; his affection for Aang helped him persuade the Earth King. Though Bosco loves eating feasts, he also lacks basic bear skills out in the wild. Devastatingly, we learn in Korra’s timeline that he was eaten by King Kuei’s daughter, the evil Earth Queen. Rest in peace, Bosco.
6 Dragonfly Bunny Spirit
In Korra’s time as the Avatar, she permanently opens the portals from the spirit world into the regular world, creating a new social order around Republic City. Aang’s granddaughter Jinora develops a keen ability to befriend and communicate with spirits, which brings these cute flying bunnies into the air bending family.
Uncle Bumi becomes attached to a particular bunny he names “Bumi Jr” or “Bum-ju.” The spirits act as guides to help the characters find places with strong spiritual energy, but they are also playful, cuddly companions with flapping winged ears.
5 Turtle Duck
Turtle ducks are easily some of the cutest common creatures populating the Avatar world. From ponds in the Fire Nation where Zuko can show his gentle side to topiary gardens in the Earth Kingdom, turtle ducks are like the Avatar equivalent of… well, ducks (with turtle shells).
They are generally shy and gentle, so when Eska refers to Bolin as her “feeble turtle duck,” it’s both demeaning and affectionate. Turtle ducks can also be eaten, as when Toph prepared a traditional braised turtle duck for Team Avatar in the comics.
4 Otter Penguin
The otter penguin is one of the earliest hybrid animals to appear prominently in the Avatar series. The first thing Aang asks when released from his hundred-year iceberg is if Katara wants to go penguin sledding with him. They use the whiskery otter-faced penguin bodies like toboggans down the icy South pole slopes – something that future generations of children are seen doing later in the series.
The design of otter penguins is especially cute, with four flippers and button noses, and they appear to be found in both North and South poles of the Water Nation tribes.
3 Polar Bear Dog
Avatar Korra’s trusty polar bear dog Naga ranks close to the top of best Avatar animal companions. Naga is loyal, sweet, and unafraid to use her full weight to greet friends or protect Korra. The combination of polar bear shape and dog-like sensibilities make Naga a very charismatic companion, even when she is masquerading as a panda bear in Bolin and Varrick’s silly films.
The comics explain how Korra befriended Naga, the baby polar bear dog, as a young child and grew their bond over time. If you are looking to find a polar bear dog in real life, consider the Akbash or the Great Pyrenees dog breed.
2 Fire Ferret
The official team mascot of Mako’s and Bolin’s pro-bending team, fire ferrets, look almost like real-world red pandas with long ferret bodies. Bolin’s fire ferret, Pabu, is capable of doing tricks, gnawing through restraints, and eating more noodles than he should.
Fire ferrets don’t seem to produce any actual fire bending capabilities, but that doesn’t make them any less adorable. In the short Nickelodeon web series “Republic City Hustle,” we learn Bolin saved Pabu from becoming pythanaconda food at a local pet shop, forging a bond that would take them through all trials and tribulations.
1 Flying Bison
The winner in terms of cutest Avatar creature is no doubt the air benders’ flying bison. (They take flight with the command “yip yip!”) From the Aang’s trusty companion Appa to the young wild flying bison herds in Legend of Korra, befriending these creatures is one of the top reasons (according to Aang’s son Tenzin) that anyone should want to be an air nomad.
The flying bison has the appearance of a yak with multiple legs and a beaver-like tail, and might have been inspired by the Catbus design of Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro. It has since taken on a life of its own as an iconic magical creature from the Avatar universe.
