The Owl House is one of Disney Channel’s most recent and popular cartoons to date. Created by Dana Terrace. The series revolves around a 14-year-old human named Luz (Sarah-Nicole Robles) who aspires to be a witch and Eda (Wendie Malick) her mentor who is a maverick and highly powerful sorceress. Having recently wrapped up its first season, The Owl House manages to offer a medley of action, adventure, fantasy, romance, comedy, drama, suspense, etc.

Additionally, the series has been praised for its LGBTQ+ representation and featured the channel’s first recurring female LGBT+ characters. Besides diversity, the show had made significant strides in its writing, animation, and subversion of stereotypes. Having released 19 episodes, so far. 10 Escape of the Palisman (8.1)

After losing Eda’s precious staff, Luz and her friends must face the Bat Queen (Isabella Rossellini) or risk losing it for good. The episode saw the reappearance of the Bat Queen, a former palisman and protector (having been abandoned by her previous owner). Apart from the hilarious antics and interactions the trio share with the Queen and King (Alex Hirsch) attempting to reclaim his “throne”, viewers learn Eda’s progressively losing control of her cursed form and is essentially a ticking time bomb.

9 Convention (8.4)

In “Convention”, viewers were presented with a litany of covens and find out Eda has an older sister named Lilith (Cissy Jones). Competition between the two sisters intensifies as Lilith’s protege Amity (Mae Whitman) and Luz face off in a witches’ duel. The episode contains oodles of exposition. Revealing why Eda is such a hot ticket for the authorities and breaking down the nine covens. Audiences also received some entertaining back-and-forth interactions between Eda and Lilith/Luz and Amity.

8 Wing it Like Witches (8.5)

Upset that Willow (Tati Gabrielle) is being targeted by peer/Amity’s former friend Boscha (Eden Reigel), Luz challenges (for Willow) the latter to a Grudgby match. While viewers were introduced to the sport in “Escape of the Palisman” here they get to see it in full swing. Grudgby is portrayed as a mixture of rugby and Quidditch from the Harry Potter series. Meanwhile, fans got to see Amity’s continuing redemption arc flourish and seeing how sincere and loyal she has become towards Luz and her friends.

7 Lost in Language (8.6)

While Luz joins Amity’s older and charismatic but mischievous, twin siblings Edric and Emira (Ryan O’Flanagan and Erica Lindbeck) to pull pranks, Eda and King find themselves babysitting the Bat Queen’s spawn. Besides being treated to the first appearance of the Bat Queen viewers witnessed some adorable maternal energy emanating from Eda while Luz tries to get in Amity’s good graces. Additionally, the audience is introduced to Amity’s siblings who apart from the main characters have become fan favorites.

6 The First Day (8.7)

Luz’s curiosity gets the best of her as she lands in trouble on her first day of Magic School. She is consequently sent to Detention Track where she cannot study magic.

The episode is littered with clever and fun allusions from the Choosy Hat (Sorting Hat), Luz’s outfit transformation being reminiscent of Sailor Moon, and a poster inscribed “Hexside Story” being a parody of the classic musical West Side Story. The world-building is also expanded upon as it was explained witches can only train one magical style.

5 Adventures in the Elements (8.9)

Luz must pass her witch placement exam or else she runs the risk of being placed in kindergarten. To prevent this, Eda takes her to a special location on the island to train. Taking place after “Lost in Language”, viewers got to see the return of her twin siblings (who are making amends for their meddlesome behavior in the prior episode). This episode marked the second spell Luz learned along with Amity growing more confident in her abilities.

4 Enchanting Grom Fight (9)

In celebration of “Grom” (Hexside’s equivalent of prom), the students celebrate, whilst a chosen one battles Grometheus or else terror will be unleashed throughout the land. Amity and Luz’s budding relationship continues and both girls face their worst fears. One of the highlights of the episode was when the duo danced together (in a beautifully, fluid animated sequence) and defeated Grometheus. Viewers who have been shipping Luz and Amity also got a treat towards the end (if the dance was not enough) about Amity’s unsent Grom invite.

3 Young Blood, Old Souls (9.2)

This season finale was worth the payoff and answered (and also left open) many stirring questions fans had.

Following from the previous episode, Luz is now alone and determined to confront Lilith to save Eda. The episode featured some compelling developments such as Lilith’s relationship with Eda, Luz’s capabilities as a witch, and what Emperor Belos has cooking. Suitably for a season finale, the series wrapped up some loose ends but also created new ones as it left on a cliffhanger.

2 Understanding Willow (9.3)

Early on in the series, it was established there was an unresolved tension between Amity and Willow. Viewers wondering why got their answer here. The episode visualized Willow’s memories creatively by capturing them as photographs that can be viewed by others.”Understanding Willow” provides another valid reason why Amity is not a typical bully. Expanding upon her character arc and being one of the first characters in the series to make a concerted effort towards reformation.

1 Agony of a Witch (9.8)

The second to last episode of season 1 proved to be a wallop of revelation and betrayal. As Eda was losing control all the puzzle pieces came together. Luz finds herself in peril while attending a field trip to the Emperor’s Castle. While action-packed the episode ended on an appropriately somber note as Luz finds herself alone after Eda completely reverts to her cursed form and is captured. Of course, not before requesting Luz to look after her homestead and reminding her how important she is to her. Truly one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the series so far. And with season two confirmed there are more amazing episodes on the rise.
