Top Four Starter Pokémon According to Data

Selecting a starter at the beginning of a player’s journey is one of the defining moments in Pokémon games. For many fans, the starter Pokémon they pick will travel with them through the game’s region to take on Gym Leaders, and eventually the Elite Four. However, not every Pokémon generation has starters that offer the best options when looking at stats and moves, and players have come together to vote on the which starters overall are considered the best available.

Thanks to features that expanded wireless capabilities in recent Pokémon games like X and Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Sword and Shield, players can now trade with others over the internet early in the game. This means that while players must pick a region starter when beginning a new save, they could easily trade to get a Pokémon from a different region. Thanks to these features, players can always ensure that they get to work alongside their favorite starter.

According to a poll that has been gathering community data on TierMaker, there are four starter Pokémon that come out on top out of the available 24 starters over every region. 3,957 players voted their preferences, which include some familiar faces for Pokémon fans. Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Mudkip and Charmander were ranked as the top choices, or ‘S’ rank, for starters by the Pokémon community. While it isn’t surprising that the original trio have made the top of the list, it is interesting to see that Mudkip was able to sneak into the top tier with them.

Players Prefer The Original Starter Choices To More Recent Games

Players also marked Cyndaquil, Totodile, Treecko, and Piplup as ‘A’ rank selections, making the Kanto, Johto and Hoenn starters the overall favorites for most players. These selections could be due to which game was the player’s introduction to the series, creating a loyalty to certain Pokémon, or the feeling that the original Pokémon starters from earlier games were more balanced than in more recent games like Sword and Shield. However, when it comes to starter preference, the selection is usually based on the personal opinions of each player and what their playstyle and party dynamics tend to be for their Pokémon journey.

Players may get to see new starter Pokémon in the future, with the rumor of new Pokémon games circulating the community now that Sword and Shield has been out for several years. Currently there is talk of a remake of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl though nothing has been confirmed. Many are wondering if there will be news of a new region during 2021, as it is the 25th Anniversary of the Pokémon series. Regardless of what may come in the future, it appears the original trio, plus a sneaky Mudkip, will remain the favorite starters of Pokémon fans for the time being.
