After being in development hell for years with countless directors joining then leaving the project, a trailer for Uncharted has finally hit the internet. The movie is an adaptation of one of the most beloved video game franchises of all time, and Tom Holland stars as the coolest treasure hunter not named Indiana Jones, Nathan Drake.

Because the movie is based on an existing property, there are so many thoughts about the trailer, especially Tom Holland’s portrayal of Nate. Between Holland not being able to shake off some Spider-Man habits, the chemistry between him and Mark Wahlberg, and the set pieces inspired by the game, Twitter is overrun with thoughts about the preview.

The Spidey Pose

Must be muscle memory for him at this point😅 #Uncharted pic.twitter.com/ZGHTKTNseQ

Tom Holland wouldn’t be a bankable name if it wasn’t for playing Spider-Man, the role that made him a movie star known across the world. In fact, it’s hard to separate the character from the actor, as Holland really threw himself into the role of Peter Parker.

It seems like Holland is finding it hard to distance himself from the web-slinger too, as the superhero pose in the Marvel movies appears in the Uncharted trailer. This tweet perfectly points that out while using the screenshot from Spider-Man 3 where Peter notes that one of his photos has been doctored.

The Auction Heist Scene

bruh this is literally the same scene 💀 #Uncharted pic.twitter.com/Ceu53foU0D

The trailer for the upcoming movie sees Nate and Sully wandering around a mansion that’s being used as an auction for centuries-old art. This is almost frame for frame the same as a chapter from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, whether it’s the two thieves speaking with each other with earpieces or trying to retrieve a crucifix-like relic.

One Twitter user put shots of the scenes from the movie and the game side-by-side for comparison. Some Redditors think Uncharted 4 is overrated, but it was levels like these that made it stand out from the other games, as the heist-like approach was refreshing. And despite the level appearing in the very first movie, it’ll still be exciting to see.

Fans Vs. General Audiences

The two moods of people watching the Uncharted trailer: pic.twitter.com/sfO5xbo1Z1

When it comes to the reception of the newly released trailer, viewers seem to be in two separate camps. One Twitter user brilliantly uses the above meme to represent the two moods that everybody felt while watching the trailer.

One group of spectators loves the trailer for its action and jokes, and those people are mostly non-gamers who haven’t played the video games. The other group is bitterly disappointed, and that’s largely down to the fact that Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as Nate and Sully are completely unlike their video game counterparts. Those characters were part of the games’ big appeal, but Wahlberg and Holland look and act completely unlike them.

What Could Have Been

They already had the perfect Nathan Drake back in 2018. #Uncharted pic.twitter.com/PRaMIJdNs5

After Tom Holland’s polarizing portrayal of Nathan Drake, this post is quick to refer fans back to the incredible fanmade short film from 2018. The short movie is an adaptation of the video game series and it stars Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake.

Fans of the game had long discussed Fillion as a likely candidate for a movie adaptation ever since the release of the first game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, due to the uncanny resemblance. The short film confirmed what everyone was thinking, as not only did he look the part, but Fillion perfectly captured the rogue’s sarcasm and determination too. The fanfare of the short film is one of the reasons fans are worried about the Uncharted movie adaptation.

Sony’s Mission Statement Was A Lie

“The Uncharted movie is going to portray Nathan Drake in his younger years” -Has whole scenes from Uncharted 3 It’s time to admit that Sony just wanted to bank on Tom Holland because he’s the popular option nowadays. 🙄 https://t.co/uFRp2hZoRD

The movie adaptation had surely gone through so many different shapes and forms, as Uncharted has been in development hell for years. However, Sony finally settled on how to approach what they clearly want to be a long-running series, which is portraying Nathan Drake in his “younger years.”

However, this Twitter user accuses Sony of casting Tom Holland as Nate not because they wanted a year one approach, but because they’re banking on Holland’s star power. They make a good argument that it isn’t actually Nate’s early years, as the trailer features scenes from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Other Naughty Dog Adaptations

The live action Last of Us adaptation vs the live action Uncharted adaptation pic.twitter.com/cGkqKIMdO4

Uncharted isn’t the only game developed by Naughty Dog that’s getting adapted. The game studio is known for two cinematic videogame series, and the other is the post-apocalyptic The Last of Us. The game is being adapted into a TV show by HBO, and using the above meme, one Twitter user expertly compares the two.

With all the updates of the TV show coming to light, such as the Boston Quarantine Zone set and Pedro Pascal as the lead character, the show is shaping up to be such a faithful adaptation. And as fun as Uncharted looks, it hasn’t exactly been given the same beloved, detailed treatment as HBO’s show.

The Sony Leaks

First, the trailer for #NoWayHome was leaked. Now, the trailer for #Uncharted has been leaked. Meanwhile, at Sony’s security department: pic.twitter.com/xWduvSoCzP

Considering how bad Sony is at keeping things locked down, this Tweet hilariously shines a light on Sony’s security department. When it comes to leaks, Sony has had an unfairly rough ride.

Not only did hundreds of personal emails leak back in 2014, which exposed all of the office politics and strange movie ideas, but most recently, two trailers for the biggest movies in the studio’s pipeline leaked too. Coincidentally, both movies are Tom Holland-led movies, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and, of course, Uncharted, which makes it even funnier given that the actor is known to slip up with spoilers in interviews.

Holland And Wahlberg’s Chemistry

I laughed so hard to this 😂😂😂 This is the chemistry I’ve been waiting for. #Uncharted#UnchartedMovie pic.twitter.com/YIj4IZ8xnZ

The Uncharted series is obviously endlessly replayable because of its sense of adventure and the incredible third-person gameplay, but the reason why it’s so popular is for its characters. Not only is each character completely unique and compelling, but they have fascinating backstories and such brilliant chemistry too.

Between all of the giant set pieces, the chemistry is one of the most exciting things that can be adapted, and it looks like that has been translated well over to the movie. This tweet refers to that, though they don’t look much like their video game counterparts, Holland and Wahlberg’s chemistry is undeniable. The user snipped out one of the funnier moments in the trailer, where Sully and Nate bang into each other on a rooftop before bickering.

The Amalgam Of All The Games

The uncharted movie trailer dropped and I’m just…. which game is it adapting???? I’m so confused by everything

For fans of the game, the chronology of the movie doesn’t entirely make sense, and for several Twitter users, the way it borrows from all of the games is a little confusing. The movie very much seems like a greatest hits of Uncharted scenes, as not only does it feature the auction heist from A Thief’s End, but so many others.

Most of the trailer centers around Nate clutching onto cargo falling out of a plane in mid-air, which is the biggest set piece in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The movie introduces Chloe, who doesn’t appear in the series until Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but as that happens to be the best Naughty Dog game, it isn’t exactly a problem. There’s also talk of Sam, Nate’s long-lost brother, who wasn’t mentioned until the fourth entry in the series. And there’s even Henry Avery’s pirate ship from the fourth game too.

The Missing Moustache

Can we bully sony pictures into editing a luscious thick moustache onto mark wahlbergs face for uncharted ? Pretty pretty please. Like we bullied sonic.

In what is another tweet that has Wahlberg in its crosshairs for not resembling Sully as much as he should, this time it’s regarding the missing mustache. The slug across the top of Sully’s upper lip in the game is one of the most iconic mustaches in history, but for some reason, Wahlberg doesn’t sport the facial hair.

The Twitter user hilariously wants Sony to superimpose a mustache on to Wahlberg in post-production. It wouldn’t be completely out of the ordinary, as it isn’t the first time a mustache has caused controversy in movies. Warner Bros. had to digitally scrub out Henry Cavill’s mustache, which he was forced to keep while shooting Mission: Impossible – Fallout at the same time.
