Umbrella Academy How Exactly Vanyas Powers Work

Initially believed to be the only member of The Umbrella Academy without abilities, Vanya Hargreeves (Ellen Page) revealed herself to be the most powerful and dangerous of all. However, the Netflix show did not always make it clear what Vanya’s powers are, or exactly how they worked.

It was revealed towards the end of The Umbrella Academy season 1 that, because Vanya’s powers are linked to her emotional state, Reginald Hargreeves had tried and failed to control Vanya’s powers; rather than risking losing control of Number Seven, he chose instead to keep her heavily medicated and to have Allison “rumor her” into believing she was ordinary. The truth remained hidden until Umbrella Academy super-fan Leonard Peabody (John Magaro), aka Harold Jenkins, discovered what had happened and took it upon himself to unlock Vanya’s memories and power.

After getting close to her, Leonard orchestrated a number of high-stress situations to trigger Vanya’s abilities. However, her powers proved too strong for her to handle and turned deadly. She killed Leonard in anger after having almost killed Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman). Ultimately, her powers grew so strong that she destroyed the Moon and brought about the apocalypse that Five was trying to prevent. In season 2, despite having lost her memories on her trip to 1963, Vanya demonstrates far better control of her powers than she had before, which is likely due to her stabilized emotional state.

Vanya’s powers allow her to manipulate sound waves as she wishes, converting them into energy that she can then use in any number of ways, from telekinesis to flight. She can convert soundwaves into bright white, destructive energy, and can create protective barriers strong enough to stop bullets. While this may sound straightforward, Vanya also demonstrates other abilities that are not obviously related to the manipulation of sound waves and mostly go unexplained in the Netflix series. She has super hearing, can manipulate the weather, and can manipulate matter, as seen when her clothes and eyes change color.

While in the Umbrella Academy comics, Vanya (who adopts the name White Violin, referenced by her outfit in the season 1 finale) channels her power through her instrument, her character in the Netflix series can use any sound, from the ring of a glass to her own heartbeat to unleash incredible force, though using her violin does focus her power. If there is a limit on the scale of Vanya’s power, it has not yet been explored: viewers have witnessed her tear apart buildings, stop missiles, and blow up the moon.

An interesting development occurs in the show’s second season, when Vanya is able to pass on her power to Sissy’s son Harlan (albeit unintentionally) and bring him back to life. This creates a telepathic bond between the two, which she is later able to remove, but which still left the boy with powers. It is difficult to define exactly the extent or workings of this new ability, but it does open up the possibility of other powers, or at least new uses of her same ability. All of this will no doubt be explored further in The Umbrella Academy’s eventual third season.
