Umbrella Academy Season 3 Needs To Fix Fans Reaction To Luther

The Umbrella Academy season 3 is around the corner, and it needs to fix Luther’s “Dad sent me to the moon” joke that has become a fan meme. The Netflix original first aired in 2019, and it was a huge hit. The live-action adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic book focuses on the Hargreeves family, seven adopted superhero siblings, who are part of a very dysfunctional family. Over the course of the two seasons, the Hargreeves try to stop an apocalypse, end up causing one, then work to revert it by traveling back in time.

When viewers meet Luther Hargreeves, or Number One (Tom Hopper) as an adult for the first time, he has been living alone on the moon for four years, sent by his father, Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) on a special mission. He comes back to Earth upon news of Reginald’s death and assumes the Academy leader role, much to his siblings’ chagrin. He then finds that the countless reports he sent to his father were never opened. This sends Luther on a spiral to find out why he was really on the moon, and if his dad had a plan for him, or if it was just a fabrication. Luther’s obsession with understanding this mission makes him mention that his dad sent him to the moon a bit too often, and he uses this as a theory for practically anything happening.

Luther’s behavior thus earned him a popular meme amongst The Umbrella Academy fans, where “dad sent me to the moon” is an unsolicited statement or a quote from a huge bear with a tiny head. While funny in itself, the meme caused a lot of viewers to believe Luther had it the easiest out of the seven (some even hated Luther before Umbrella Academy season 2 redeemed him). But living all alone on the moon with zero contact from his father (or anyone) can’t have been an easy ride. This is why Umbrella Academy season 3 should address Luther’s hard time through a flashback or some other means. It would be useful to better flesh out Luther’s character and explain why his reaction to learning his father never cared about the mission was so intense.

When Reginald sent Luther to the moon, he was the last child still loyal to him. His faith in Reginald was unshaken, even after all the nasty, abusive things their father had done to his other six siblings. Before the moon mission, Reginald sent Luther on a solo mission to thwart a biochemical disaster, but it backfired, and Luther almost died. Reginald saved Luther in Umbrella Academy using a serum that had the unfortunate side effect of giving him an ape body. Perhaps this strengthened Luther’s faith in his dad, while all his siblings lost it. So when Luther returns home and discovers his father didn’t touch his reports, he is deeply shaken. Moreover, later in the series, the deceased Reginald tells Klaus he wished he burned the reports instead of letting Luther find them – this breaks Luther even more.

There are several theories as to why Reginald actually sent Luther to the moon. Perhaps he wanted to give Luther a sense of purpose after his accident, it was a fabrication designed to make Luther unite with his siblings in hatred of their father, or Luther’s moon mission was actually real, as in season 2 the Hargreeves find Reginald was involved in the US – USSR space race. Whatever the reason, the mission scarred Luther, and it would be good to see The Umbrella Academy address this in its next season.
