The creator of Undertale has revealed that he composed one of the songs for the upcoming Pokémon Sword & Shield for Nintendo Switch. Undertale was developed almost solely by Toby Fox, whose work is heavily influenced by Nintendo games–most notably the EarthBound/Mother series.

Undertale grew a massive fanbase in the year following its release and this extended to Japan when the game was localized for that region in 2017. The love for Undertale among prominent figures in the industry was such that Fox was able to collaborate with different Japanese developers, one of which was Masahiro Sakurai of Super Smash Bros. fame. Sakurai talked about hanging out with Fox at his home, following the announcement of a Sans outfit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Fox also created a remix of “Megalovania” specifically for the game that came bundled with the Sans costume.

It seems that Fox’s collaborations with Nintendo aren’t done yet, as he has announced on Twitter that he has composed a song for Pokémon Sword & Shield. Fox stated in the comments of the post that it isn’t one of the main tracks. The announcement post was accompanied by a drawing of Yamper, which is one of the new Pokémon in Pokémon Sword & Shield.

Hey, I’m finally allowed to announce this: I was asked to compose a track for Pokémon Sword & Shield! It’s a huge honor to be asked to be part of something like this. I hope you enjoy hearing it when the game comes out! pic.twitter.com/VmroEgJWqI

Pokémon Sword & Shield won’t be the first time that Toby Fox composed music for a Nintendo game, nor is it the first time that he has worked with Game Freak. Fox recently composed the entire soundtrack for Little Town Hero, which was an RPG for Nintendo Switch that was released earlier in October. Little Town Hero was one of Game Freak’s rare non-Pokémon titles and the fact that Fox was asked to work on it had already led to speculation that he would also contribute music to Pokémon Sword & Shield.

Undertale and it’s successor, Deltarune, have acquired huge fanbases in Japan and it’s no surprise that Fox has been asked to compose music for popular video game franchises, especially considering how beloved the Undertale soundtrack is among gamers. The Pokémon series is no slouch when it comes to music and it has had its fair share of memorable tracks over the years so the pairing is a matchmade in heaven of sorts.

There has been controversy surrounding Pokémon Sword & Shield since E3 2019 regarding the removal of the National Dex and it seems that many of the recent announcements regarding the games have been working hard to try and win back the fanbase. The addition of Gigantamax forms for classic Kanto Pokémon and the new regional forms/evolutions might help to please fans of the classic Pokémon games, but bringing on Toby Fox for even a single track is sure to win the attention of Undertale fans across the world.
