Vikings 8 Things About Torvi That Make No Sense

History Channel’s Vikings features many strong female characters in its ranks, with their roles in the viking society getting more significant with each passing season. One of these women is Torvi, who was introduced in Season 2 as Jarl Borg’s pregnant second wife. After her husband suffered a brutal death, Torvi settles in Kattegat. She is now on shameless Björn’s radar and the two eventually get married.

But since vikings are not really a monogamous type, she ends up with Björn’s younger brother, Ubbe. Torvi is caring, strong-willed and loyal. With each succeeding season, this shield maiden gets more fearless and brave. However, there are certain things that simply don’t add up about her character, ranging from personality quirks to some weird inconsistencies.

8 Her Transformation From Abused Wife To Fierce Shield Maiden

Viking’s plot, so far, has covered several decades worth of story, so there definitely was time for lots of character development. However, it’s highly unlikely that a shy young girl such as Torvi somehow ends up as a fierce, independent warrior in a relatively short period of time.

Torvi has always been brave, but she didn’t handle blood and gore well at all. Previously, she fainted while watching Jarl Borg being blood-eagled but by Season 5, she is seemingly untouchable in battle and kills everybody left and right. This transformation isn’t impossible, but it feels rather abrupt.

7 First Björn, Then Ubbe

Perhaps it’s all very logical: Torvi simply has a thing for Ragnar’s sons or the Lothbrok family in general. But what makes zero sense about it is just how effortlessly she went from being Björn’s wife to Ubbe’s wife.

She initiated the whole thing by kissing Ubbe after the two discussed what a bad, power-hungry wife Margrethe is. Torvi now has a son with Ubbe, so her children are simultaneously cousins and siblings. In today’s world, such family trees make zero sense at all — of course, this probably DID make sense given the context of the setting.

6 She Somehow Survives Life-Threatening Injuries

Even by Vikings standards, “On The Eve” was a bloody episode. After the battle, Torvi lies in the mud and she looks pretty dead. With two arrows in her arms and that empty look, the audience expected that her story ends right then and there.

However, in the next episode, “The Reckoning”, Torvi is miraculously alive. Not only is she not dead, she is perfectly healthy, chilling with her fellow shield maidens. How exactly did this happen?

5 She Doesn’t Seem To Age

While male characters obviously age and wither, the women of the show stay the same. Torvi has lived through four marriages, witnessed deaths of countless people she loved, had four children and fought in several battles. However, she looks just as young and resilient as she did in Season 2 – perhaps even better!

Torvi must be at least 40 years old by now. In that time period, people rarely made it so far and when they did, they were frail and weak instead of teeming with life.

4 Her Loyalty To Lagertha

Torvi is the kind of a character that no one really pays too much attention to, even though she is always there. At some point, Torvi is established as Lagertha’s devoted friend and counselor.

Sure, Lagertha supported Torvi when she decided for Björn over Erlendur, but the writers didn’t dedicate much time to develop their relationship, so it comes across as a bit forced and illogical.

3 Her Reaction To Guthrum’s Death

“Moments Of Vision” was one of Season 5’s strongest episodes. In a dramatic battle, Ragnar’s son Hvitserk kills Torvi’s firstborn, Guthrum. While Torvi didn’t seem to really care about him all that much, she naturally breaks down as she witnesses his death. She runs off Hvitserk and takes several slow-motion moments to say goodbye to him. The battle rages on, but she gets to take some time-off.

What makes even less sense is this: Lagertha could have prevented his death, but she just stood there watching.

2 She Left Kattegat To Find Floki

With Kattegat forever changed and her ex-husband proclaimed king, Torvi embarks on an adventure with Ubbe. He wants to find Floki and Torvi seems to share his passion.

Why does Torvi care about Floki? The two never had any meaningful exchanges, but all of a sudden she’d risk life and limb to find him. The happy couple makes it to Iceland and Torvi gives birth to their son, Ragnar.

1 She Survived More Battles Than Realistically Possible

Vikings taught us that women can be great warriors, too. They are fast and make for smaller targets, but Torvi is unfortunately not very skilled at fighting. She’s capable in her own right, but she’s not exactly the best female warrior in the show.

With that knowledge, are we supposed to believe she learned how to fight in just a couple of years while it took most other fighters their whole lives to prepare for battles? Even when she is seriously injured, she magically gains her full fighting power back, as if two arrows to vital parts of her body were nothing but flesh wounds.
