Vikings Lagerthas Best (& Worst) Character Traits

While Vikings is ostensibly about Ragnar Lothbrok and the Sons of Ragnar over the years, Lagertha may well be the real central character – and she’s certainly one of the most loved by fans. Unlike Ragnar and his children, or the various Kings he meets, or his other enemies and friends, Lagertha is one of the most purely heroic characters in the series. That’s not to say that she isn’t complex, of course, but simply that she is the epitome of a shieldmaiden of legend.

Lagertha is a fighter, a defender, a protector, and an incredible ruler. She is a great mother, a staunch friend and ally, and an extraordinarily capable woman – and someone who manages to live to old age, despite being a life-long warrior. However, even the Legendary Lagertha has her flaws…

10 Worst: Stubbornness

One of Lagertha’s most frustrating attributes is her stubbornness. She has an incredibly powerful will, and when she makes her mind up to do something, nothing in this world, not even Ragnar Lothbrok, will stop her. However, at times this can cause problems – it may mean that she doesn’t listen to people, or takes huge risks that can be problematic (even with her own health). She can be adaptable when forced to – as seen when she leaves Ragnar and marries again, but this is a rare occurrence.

9 Best: Inner Strength

Lagertha is not someone to be consumed by grief or to wallow in self-pity, even though she has plenty of reason to. Her daughter dies of a sickness, her husband wishes to marry another woman and she decides to leave him, she is told she can have no more children even though she desperately wants to, she is mistreated by her second husband… and yet throughout it, she does not become bitter or broken down. Instead, she continues to rise, constantly, over every obstacle because of her inspiring inner resources.

8 Worst: Violent Temper

Vikings Lagerthas Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Admittedly, this is the world of Vikings, where essentially every character has a violent temper and characters routinely get into fights to settle their differences or deal with their emotions. However, there’s no escaping the fact that Lagertha has a vicious temper and can be extremely violent – and not just in battle, where her violence is an asset.

When she and Ragnar get into arguments in the early seasons, they involve her physically attacking him, even if he seems to find this an attractive trait of hers. And later, when her second husband abuses her, she reacts by killing him – not an unjustified act, by any means, but clearly a violent one.

7 Best: Protective

Vikings Lagerthas Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Lagertha may be capable of doing great violence, but she is usually doing it in service of the people that she loves. She battles to protect Kattegat, to protect Ragnar, to protect her children, and even (in the end) to protect the people that she lives nearby, even though they are not family and she simply wanted to retire to farm life. She protects her slaves, her servants, her shieldmaidens, her children, and her people, no matter what it takes.

6 Worst: Too Self-Sacrificing

Of course, the downside of being willing to protect anyone, no matter what it takes, is that ‘what it takes’ in the end is her life. Hvisterk may have been the one to actually kill her (in a stupor, hallucinating that she is Ivar), but he was only able to as she was gravely (potentially fatally) injured already. And that injury was sustained in protecting the people that lived near her retirement farm – even though she was exhausted and no longer wanted to fight. Even early in the series, when she leaves Ragnar, she is risking her own safety and happiness to allow him to have sons, as she believes she can give him no more children. And she is willing to leave her only child, Bjorn, behind if he chose it.

5 Best: Independent

Vikings Lagerthas Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Most of the women of Vikings are wonderfully independent, although many do make a point of talking about the fact that life is certainly easier and more secure when in a relationship with a man who can provide for them.

However, Lagertha may be the most independent of all of them. She loves being in love, but she is able to leave Ragnar, and spend most of the rest of the series alone, without needing to find someone else to help her. She even chooses to retire alone, and thrives in solitude.

4 Worst: Refuses To Ask For Help

The flip side of Lagertha’s independence is an unwillingness to ask for help – which can often cause more harm than good. It becomes increasingly clear that she views asking for help as a sign of weakness, much of the time – although there are moments that balance this out, especially as she gets older. By the time she wishes to retire, she is able to ask for what she needs to create her new farm, and it’s good to see that growth in her.

3 Best: Empathy

For all her faults, the last thing that Lagertha could be accused of is selfishness. She is deeply understanding of everyone – she empathizes with all of Bjorn’s decisions, from when he first thought he would stay with Ragnar to his desire to explore. She empathizes with the Sons of Ragnar, even after fighting against some. She even empathizes with Ragnar when he wishes to marry Aslaug, much as she hates it, and even though this empathy sometimes comes at a great personal cost.

2 Worst: Jealousy and Grudge Holding

Vikings Lagerthas Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Lagertha and Ragnar may have offered to have Athelstan join them in bed, but when Lagertha wasn’t the one initiating it, she was surprisingly jealous. She became viciously angry about Ragnar’s occasionally roving eye, and while fans are sympathetic to this, it didn’t always help her. Then later, even after Lagertha decided to leave Ragnar, so he would be free to marry Aslaug and bear his sons, she held an impressively long grudge against her for it. She spent decades quietly living elsewhere, plotting her revenge, rising up in a new Earldom to lead, and then came back, took over Kattegat, and murdered her former romantic rival.

1 Best: Leadership Ability

Lagertha ruled at Ragnar’s side for a time, and later ruled over her own Earldom (after murdering her husband, the Earl). She leads her own armies, her people, and even a band of farmers in the end, when she returns to farming. There is something about her blend of stubbornness, passion, empathy, and strength that makes her an incredible leader, and one who can balance long-term gain with short-term victory. If she had ruled Kattegat from the start, things may have been very different.
