Vikings Why The Seer Was Killed Off In Season 5

History Channel’s Vikings has seen many deaths over the course of five seasons – not all of them surprising, but there was one that many viewers weren’t really expecting: the Seer, who was killed in season 5. But why did the series’ seemingly untouchable Oracle meet his fate? Vikings began its run in 2013 and originally followed the journeys of legendary Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his Viking brothers, but the series has evolved to the point where it’s now about Ragnar’s sons and their own travels.

Vikings is preparing for its sixth and final season, which will see Ragnar’s sons Bjorn and Ivar pitted against one another for the future of Norway, promising a lot of action, blood, and deaths, just like the previous seasons. Season 5 brought some surprises with it, among those being the death of the Seer (played by John Kavanagh), a character who had been present since season 1 and for hundreds of years before the events in Vikings. The Seer was one of those characters that seemed untouchable due to his role as the Oracle of Kattegat. He survived many events and horrible visions that he translated to those who came to him in search for answers about their future, as Vikings believed their fate was already decided.

The Seer died in the Vikings season 5 episode “The Lost Moment”, where Ivar visited him and asked for him to confirm his divinity as a god, something the Seer obviously knew was just a product of his unstable mind. When the Seer instead told him the truth as well as what’s in store for him, Ivar put an axe through the Seer’s head. Maybe those between the gods and the world of men can also die like any other human.

Why The Seer Had To Die

According to series creator Michael Hirst (via Variety), the decision to kill the Seer was based around the character of Ivar and his self-proclaimed divinity. The idea of being a god messed with Ivar’s head, who wasn’t the most sane character in the series – case in point, he killed his own brother, Sigurd, after an argument and didn’t show any remorse. Ivar loses his temper very easily in Vikings, and the idea of being a god only makes it worse. Hirst explains that Ivar “couldn’t bear to feel someone was laughing at him” or didn’t believe that he might be divine, and killing the Seer not only represents that but also shows how far he’s willing to go. It’s Ivar’s way to prove to himself and others that he is a powerful being.

But given the mysterious nature of the Seer, not even Hirst is sure that he’s actually dead. As previously mentioned, the Seer lived for hundreds of years between life and death, so his “death” raises the question of if someone that is neither alive nor dead can be killed. Details on the Seer’s life are unknown, but what is true is that he had many magical abilities, most notably seeing the future (which, again, for Vikings was something already written). The Seer is believed by some to be a god in human form, which would explain why he’s trapped between life and death – and which would represent a bigger obstacle for Ivar, the so-called god (or demigod). It’s yet to be seen if the Seer’s presence will be felt in Vikings season 6 and if Ivar will pay for what he did to him, whether by the hands of others or those of the Seer himself.
