Walking Dead Maggie Using Whisperer Tactics Means Alpha Actually Won

Warning! SPOILERS ahead for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 7.

The Walking Dead season 11 puts Maggie in a Whisperer mask as she uses some of their tactics against the Reapers, suggesting that Alpha may have won the war after all. Season 11’s first of three episode batches is nearly over, with its latest episode, “Promises Broken”, being the penultimate entry before The Walking Dead’s final season goes on hiatus. As such, the conflict between the survivors and the Reapers is nearing a tipping point. There are hints that any day now Daryl’s subterfuge is going to be discovered, threatening not just himself by Leah, too. All the while, Maggie is preparing to attack Meridian, her former home and the current hideout of the Reapers.

When Maggie left The Walking Dead in season 9, she and Herschel found a home in a new community, Meridian. This community was attacked by the Reapers not long after, and Meridian’s few survivors are who joined Maggie upon her return to Alexandria in season 10. Now, with Alexandria still reeling from the Whisperer War, Maggie has taken a group back to Meridian to loot its supplies. Of course, this trip has been a complete disaster, and after narrowly surviving Washington D.C.’s subway system, they were set upon by the Reapers. With many of their small group dead, Maggie and Negan are leading those who remain against the Reapers, and they’re doing so by pulling a page out of Alpha’s playbook.

In The Walking Dead season 11, episode 7, “Promises Broken”, Maggie and Negan are putting their issues aside (for now) in order to lead an attack against the Reapers. Maggie knows the layout of the Meridian and where they need to go, while Negan knows how they’re going to breach it: a herd. Using what he learned from his time among the Whisperers, Negan teaches Maggie how to make masks and move among the walkers. With these new skills, they begin to gather a small group of walkers, penning them in the forest like livestock. When the time comes, they lead this group of walkers towards Meridian, gathering more and more until they’re at the head of a huge herd. Maggie and Negan are bringing this herd to the Reapers’ doorstep, but by unleashing it, they’re giving Alpha one final victory.

Alpha’s whole deal centered on the idea that when the world ended, civilization went with it. Now, the world is the ruled by the dead and only the strongest can survive. It’s not an outlook that’s entirely unique to her, but the means by which she went about it were an approach unseen before. The Whisperer way of life came with certain tactical advantages, too, because such close proximity with walkers meant they could harness their terrifying power like a weapon. Unleashing a herd of walkers on the unsuspecting was the Whisperers’ go-to attack strategy, and it’s known to be so effective that Maggie barely thinks twice about attempting it herself. But in doing so, she’s also admitting that in some respects, Alpha was right.

For all the many attempts to restore order and bring human civilization back from the brink, The Walking Dead has shown again and again that in a world ruled by the dead, only the strong can survive. That strength can take many different forms, but it often comes down to those who are willing to make the tough decisions. In this case, it’s Maggie acknowledging that in order to beat one enemy, they need to become more like another. She’s embracing the Whisperers’ horde while knowing full well the kind of chaos and destruction it will cause. Still, it’s what needs to be done in order for their people to have even a shot at surviving, but it proves Alpha was right about some things: only the strongest can survive and nothing is stronger than the dead.
