WandaVision Sets Up Monica Rambeau As The MCUs Best Leader For Avengers 5

WandaVision could be setting up Monica Rambeau to lead an MCU superhero team in Avengers 5. The Disney+ series introduced Teyonah Parris as a grown-up version of the character (first seen as a child in Captain Marvel), and also gives her the superpower setup that will eventually turn her into the hero Photon (or Spectrum, as she is currently called in the comics). In the comics, Monica eventually rises to one of the Marvel universe’s most esteemed positions, and the MCU could be foreshadowing a similar story in the future.

The Marvel comics had Monica Rambeau (who, in that universe, has no direct connection to Carol Danvers) receiving her energy-based superpowers after being struck by an extra-dimensional energy weapon. She subsequently develops a range of abilities – some incredibly strong – and becomes a superhero. Monica’s superhero name has changed several times over the years, including Captain Marvel (the second), Photon, Spectrum, and Pulsar. And after some time training with and fighting alongside the Avengers, Monica became the team leader.

Monica ran the Avengers for a time in the comics, setting precedent for her to do so in the MCU as well. With Iron Man dead and Steve Rogers retired, the heroes will need a new leader to rally behind for the next major crossover. Avengers 5 likely isn’t coming in Phase 4, but it will come eventually. When it does, Monica could be in a prime position to step up and take charge. She’ll have a major role in Captain Marvel 2, which should establish her as a fully-formed superhero.

Monica’s comics past isn’t the only thing setting her up as a possible future leader of the Avengers. Through WandaVision, Monica proved herself to a quick-thinking and courageous leader, capable of organizing, taking action, and fighting for what she believes. She’s already had a prolific career with S.W.O.R.D., and now it looks like she’ll be working with Nick Fury himself – the man who first put the Avengers together. All that amounts to an impressive resume, in addition to Monica Rambeau’s immense powers.

The current Avengers who still have active storylines in the MCU aren’t necessarily clear picks for leadership positions. Thor has never been the type to properly take charge, Spider-Man is still incredibly young, Hawkeye has stepped back from the spotlight after the events of Infinity War and Endgame. and it’s unclear where Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes will end up after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Wakanda is still largely independent from the Avengers, and Ant-Man certainly won’t be leading any super teams any time soon. That primarily leaves Carol Danvers, who will likely be training Monica herself in Captain Marvel 2. If the Avengers need a leader farther into the future, WandaVision has proven that Monica Rambeau could be a perfect pick.
