WandaVision: Why Aaron Taylor-Johnson Should Return As Quicksilver (& Why Evan Peters Should Stay)

WandaVision delivered a twist when Evan Peters showed up as Quicksilver. He could stick around or Aaron Taylor-Johnson could return to his MCU role.

Disney+’s WandaVision’s last episode ended on a powerful cliffhanger. Evan Peters made his debut on the show seemingly playing Pietro Maximoff, Wanda’s brother who, up to that point, was presumed dead, killed during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. While fans have long presumed Pietro would return during the series, it was surprising to see the character portrayed by Peters and not Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

There could be a reason behind the change, and if Peters is indeed playing Pietro from another universe, then bringing him along could be an organic way to introduce Fox’s X-Men into the MCU. However, it could also open a Pandora’s box that could overcomplicate things, and with Taylor-Johnson’s appearance being so short within the MCU, a strong case could be made that he deserves another shot at the role.

10 Peters Should Stay: Better Received In The Role

When Taylor-Johnson made his debut in Age of Ultron, he was well-received in the role of Pietro. However, he also got lost in the extremely large ensemble cast of the film. This isn’t necessarily the actor’s fault, but rather the fact that a movie loaded with characters meant some didn’t get to shine.

Peters, on the other hand, was an immediate stand-out in X-Men: Days of Future Past and continued his winning streak in the more divisive X-Men: Apocalypse. His take on the character was praised for being funny, charming, energetic, and innovative, and he was widely considered to be the superior of both versions.

9 Taylor-Johnson Should Return: The Hydra Connection

Because of the constraints Disney once faced, Wanda and Pietro couldn’t be referred to as “mutants.” The MCU instead used the word “enhanced” to describe the twins, and further explained their powers by having HYDRA experiment on them, thus granting them their abilities.

Keeping Taylor-Johnson’s version of the character would be a good way to remind audiences about HYDRA’s importance. Many fans have theorized that HYDRA is actually behind Wanda’s fantasy world, and so far there have been some references to the organization in the show, in the form of the commercials for the Strücker Watch in episode two, and the Hydra Soap in episode three.

8 Peters Should Stay: Showing There’s Actual Consequences

The MCU has long been criticized for its apparent lack of consequences. Characters often survive because of extreme cases of plot armor. Even if they do suffer consequences, the writers find a way for them to return, like what happened with Coulson, Gamora, Groot, and most recently, Loki and Vision.

So far, Taylor-Johnson’s Pietro is one of the only major characters to stay dead within the MCU continuity. Bringing him back would further confirm the fact that no one stays dead in the Marvel universe, thus removing all stakes and hindering the personal connection between audiences and characters in future movies.

7 Taylor-Johnson Should Return: Keeping Things Simple

Should Taylor-Johnson’s Pietro return, things would be pretty straightforward. The show can simply say Wanda brought him back to life, or maybe she “stole” one from the multiverse. They could even have her steal the Time Stone from Stephen Strange and go back in time to stop her brother’s death, which might explain how she enters into conflict with the Sorcerer Supreme.

Whatever the explanation, it’s still a simple enough reason: Wanda missed her brother and wanted him alive for her family to truly be complete. Taylor-Johnson’s presence needs no extra reasons, whereas Peters’ requires explanations as to why he looks nothing like the previous Pietro, or why he has his own (younger) sister and father in his own world.

6 Peters Should Stay: Time In A Bottle

One of the main reasons why Peter’s version of the character was so popular is the elaborate sequences in which his character demonstrated his super useful powers. The most memorable one is the kitchen scene in Days of Future Past. Set to the tune of Jim Croce’s 1973 hit “Time in a Bottle,” it immediately became one of the most talked-about moments in the film.

The idea of seeing another sequence like that one, this time within the MCU, is too good to pass. If Wanda was added, it would become instantly iconic. The red of Wanda’s powers and the silver of Quicksilver’s would make the sequence one of the most visually stunning in all the MCU.

5 Taylor-Johnson Should Return: The Chance To Develop Pietro

Because his presence within the larger MCU was so short, and unlike Peters who had three movies to develop his character, Taylor-Johnson had little to no time to give Pietro a true personality. Indeed, one of the main complaints of the MCU’s treatment of the character is that he simply showed up to die, thus diminishing his impact on the story.

This could be corrected if Taylor-Johnson returned in WandaVision. Pietro could finally be given a true role in the universe, a purpose to justify his existence. And Taylor-Johnson, a very capable actor as shown by his performances in films like Nocturnal Animals, could finally have a chance to flex his acting muscles.

4 Peters Should Stay: He’s A Better Fit For The MCU

With Peters, the MCU has another chance with the character. Their first shot at bringing Pietro to life was met with an indifferent reception, so this time, they could take advantage of the gimmick and make something really unique with the character.

Peters’ version of the character, with his fast-paced speech, boyish charm, and more comedic approach, fits right in with the MCU’s distinctive style. He nails the comedy while still providing enough gravitas to guide the character through all the multiverse madness.

3 Taylor-Johnson Should Return: He Has A Connection With Wanda

Childhood memories hold a special place in people’s hearts. Wanda and Pietro had very difficult childhoods, essentially becoming each other’s sole source of love and support once their parents were killed. From the womb, the two had a very strong, intimate, and nearly unbreakable bond that only became stronger through the years.

This is something Peters’ version of the character will never have and can never imitate. Should Peters stay in the role, his Quicksilver would need to develop a new relationship with Wanda, one that would most likely always live in the shadow of the one she had with her Pietro.

2 Peters Should Stay: A True House Of M

If Peters did stay in the MCU as Pietro Maximoff, that would open the possibility for his father to also join the action. In the Fox universe, Magneto was played by Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender, whose portrayal of the role was met with critical acclaim.

The idea of having both Maximoff children alongside their father is extremely ambitious and ultimately irresistible, and could also indicate that their younger sister, the mutant Polaris, might also eventually show up. Furthermore, Fassbender joining the MCU could also mean James McAvoy might show up as Professor Xavier, which in turn might signal the X-Men’s arrival is closer than ever.

1 Taylor-Johnson Should Return: Continuity

Having Peters be the new MCU Quicksilver might be too complicated for some viewers. After all, the Fox movies weren’t nearly as popular as the Infinity Saga, which means some people might not even be aware of who Peters’ Quicksilver or any of the other mutants are.

Taylor-Johnson would keep things within the Marvel family, and would also keep the storyline straight and without any of the time-traveling and alternate-reality shenanigans that some felt plagued Avengers: Endgame. It would also be a way to preserve the MCU’s already confusing continuity while still preparing the room for the X-Men’s inevitable arrival.
