Wet Hot American Summer Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Wet Hot American Summer introduces an array of goofy characters. Nearly all of them make audiences laugh, and Wet Hot American Summer is one of co-writer Michael Showalter’s best projects. Many of the characters present silly behavior, but that doesn’t mean they lack intelligence.

Some campers have a clear leg up in smarts like Professor Henry Newman while others like Katie Finnerty are harder to size up intellectually. However, the actions the characters take on the last day of summer camp reveal who is smarter than their peers.

Andy

Andy gives audiences some of Wet Hot American Summer’s funniest moments. His stubborn “bad boy” image makes for hilarious gags, from when he is forced to clean up a mess in the cafeteria, to ignoring swimming campers when on lifeguard duty. However, Andy is perhaps the most lack-witted character in the film.

He is presented as absent-minded, thoughtlessly saying “my butt itches” when his girlfriend Katie Finnerty tries to speak seriously about their relationship. Andy’s brainless lines help make Wet Hot American Summer a great comedy, even if some audiences think it is in bad taste. He acts without thinking, making him appear less bright than many of his fellow campers.

Victor Pulak

Victor spends most of Wet Hot American Summer trying to be intimate with Abby Bernstein. He tells everyone at camp he is a womanizer but hasn’t had a single relationship. When he ditches his responsibilities as a camp counselor, he reveals his dull wits.

Victor crashes his van when he rushes back to camp to meet Abby after dropping off Niel and their campers. He lacks the reasoning to drive carefully and ends up hitting a tree when he isn’t paying attention. Furthermore, his constant lying about being a ladies’ man underscores his lack of emotional intelligence.

Gerald “Coop” Cooperberg

If there is a protagonist in Wet Hot American Summer, some fans would say it is Coop. He spends his last day at camp pursuing Katie. He shows some smart behavior in his plans to be with her, but ultimately his one-track mind underscores his less bright tendencies.

When he takes his sweatshirt back a few seconds after warming Katie up with it, he reveals his dim wits. Coop’s judgment is clouded by his affection for Katie. He can’t use reasoning to see she will always pick Andy over him.

Katie Finnerty

Katie is the object of affection for Gerald “Coop” Cooperberg. She dates Andy, but Coop tries to get her to notice him and realize how poorly Andy treats her. The familiar plotline works and helps make Wet Hot American Summer a great college comedy. Katie’s wits are put on display with their love triangle.

Katie appears less smart than some of her peers in that she can’t see that Andy is duping her. However, at the film’s end, she tells coop she doesn’t care that Andy is “lame” and cheats on her. The moment reveals she is observant and makes her own decisions after thinking critically.

Gene

Gene is the cook at Camp Firewood. He’s disgruntled and often lashes out at his co-workers. Gene proves to not have the most supple mind when he hallucinates that a can of mixed vegetables talks to him.

Some fans say Gene’s unstable mind is one of Wet Hot American Summer’s funniest running gags. However, he isn’t without intelligence. Gene shows his wisdom in his training Coop. He is able to teach Coop the “new way,” and that “it is and isn’t about the girl.” He is able to see what Coop can’t thanks to his smarts.

Neil

Neil is Victor’s buddy. He acts as his sidekick, chuckling along to Victor’s stream of jokes and cheering him along in his pursuit for romance at camp. His relationship with Neil presents his level of intelligence.

Neil shows his lack of critical thinking in believing Victor’s transparent lies about being a Cassanova. Victor’s claims are clearly a reaction to insecurity, but Neil can’t see it. However, he is able to save rafting campers from getting stranded downstream, proving his quick thinking.

Gail von Kleinenstein

Gail is one of the camp staff members who seems to be a full-fledged teacher. She shows her smarts in running a classroom at camp firewood and teaching the young campers. However, she isn’t as smart as some of her peers.

Gail’s lack of judgment is shown in the way she speaks to her students. She breaks down and tells them about her woeful divorce. The scenes when she is being comforted by her students make for some of the funniest moments of the movie, but reveal her clouded mind.

Aaron

Aaron is just a young camper, but proves to be one of the smartest characters in Wet Hot American Summer. His sharp-witted mind is itself a gag, considering his pre-teen age.

Arron shows his intelligence when he gives Gail advice about her divorce. He speaks eloquently and gently, like a wise man of many years of age. His characterization is a great goof, but his smarts are hard to deny.

Beth

Beth is the head of Camp Firewood. She shows she is one of the most intelligent characters in the film in her meticulous management of the camp. Furthermore, she is attracted to a similarly supple mind in Professor Henry Newman.

Beth and Henry have a romance in the film. They have nearly matched wits, and Beth helps Henry save the camp from a falling piece of NASA’s Skylab. Her ability to juggle her responsibilities at camp, along with her help to Henry underscores her bright mind.

Professor Henry Newman

Even though Henry is “less than” as an associate professor, he is perhaps the smartest character in all of Wet Hot American Summer. He is knowledgeable and passionate about astrophysics. He discusses his passion for libraries with Beth.

Henry’s intelligence is displayed most clearly in his plan to save Camp Firewood. His intellectual interests allow him to notice a falling piece of NASA’s skylab heading for camp. Beth helps him, but it is he who comes up with an intricate plan to save the campers and staff.
