What Captain America 4 With Sam Means For Steve Rogers MCU Future

As Captain America 4 is officially coming, reportedly focused on Sam Wilson, opening a mystery of what it means for Steve Rogers’ future in the MCU. Ever since their final moment together in Avengers: Endgame, Anthony Mackie’s Falcon was set to take on the mantle (or shield, to be more precise) of the first Avenger. With Evans’ character getting his happy ending with Peggy Carter, this set up the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, with Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes starring in their own spinoff. Throughout the season, it became both an internal and external battle for Steve’s shield. While John Walker became the wrong person to become Captain America, Sam had to overcome his inner concern about being the one to continue Steve’s legacy.

In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier finale, Sam had fully embraced it and officially left the Falcon mantle behind, by assuming his role as the MCU’s new Captain America. As Sam took on the shield, he and Bucky together stopped the Flag Smashers once and for all. While the finale was big in itself, Marvel Studios didn’t seem to want to wait any further with what was coming next. Hours after the finale had dropped on Disney+, it was revealed that Marvel Studios are developing a Captain America 4, with the creators of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

As most projects are with Marvel Studios, everything is being kept under wrap for Captain America 4 in terms of story details. It will probably be quite some time before the studio begins to reveal more extended details as they start assembling their creative team behind the camera, as well as in front. With the project seemingly being set to feature Macke’s character in the lead, there are definitely questions about how this affects Evans’ future in the MCU.

Captain America 4 Is Happening, Likely With Sam Wilson

Malcolm Spellman, who was a showrunner and lead writer on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, is penning a screenplay with one of the show’s staff writers, Dalan Musson. Because the project is in the early development stages, there is no aimed release date yet, as well as no clarify if Captain America 4 will be part of Phase 4 or perhaps even Phase 5. Marvel Studios already have multiple features lined up for 2022 and 2023, meaning the fourth Captain America installment will most likely not hit theaters until 2024. While Marvel Studios is keeping their lips sealed for now about casting, it is almost a given that Sam will be the main character of Captain America 4.

Following The Falcon and The Winter Soldier finale, as well as the showrunner and one of the writers being attached to feature film, it’s obvious that this is set to feature Mackie’s character, this time as the titular figure. It would be quite the surprise of the century for Marvel Studios if this somehow weren’t about Sam. Marvel has even made it publicly clear on Captain America’s social media pages that Sam is officially the MCU’s new Cap. While there is no cast attached (yet), it would make sense for Stan’s Bucky to join Captain America 4 as a supporting player.

Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers Isn’t Expected To Return in Captain America 4

Long before The Falcon and The Winter Soldier had come out on Disney+, there were already rumors about Evans returning to the MCU. Deadline Hollywood reported that Evans was in talks with Marvel Studios to return to the role of Steve Rogers, in an unspecified MCU project. However, the same day that report came out, Evans seemingly denied any truth to this, stating that it was “News to me.” On March 17, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also shot down Deadline’s report about Evans coming back to the franchise as Steve. While both Feige and Evans put those rumors to rest, a few interesting details came out in the midst of Captain America 4’s announcement.

While everything is pointing to it being Mackie’s Captain America that will take center stage, Deadline Hollywood claims that the fourth installment was never the rumored project that was being eyed for Evans. At this point in time, Steve may in fact not be involved with Captain America 4 in any capacity at all. It wouldn’t be surprising, though, if Evans did end up having at least a cameo, but if that happens, fans won’t know until they see Captain America 4, as Marvel Studios is good at keeping those surprise appearances under wrap.

Will Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers Return In The MCU’s Future?

Even though Evans’ Steve is, for the time being, not attached to Captain America 4, the question that people should be asking is what the character’s status in the MCU is right now. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, when Sam gets the shield from Steve, the former Captain America was now an elderly gentleman because he had actually lived through his timeline with Peggy. But the way that they talk about Steve in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is interestingly ambiguous. While Steve has retired, it’s never clear if he had passed away sometime after Avengers: Endgame and before The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Based on various character dialogue, it almost sounds like that Steve is no longer with them.

While it would be understandable if Steve is dead, it seems unlikely that the MCU wouldn’t give him a sendoff on-screen. Given how instrumental Steve was as Captain America for the MCU’s first three phases, it would seem a bit tone-deaf if they didn’t at least have a memorial for the character in one of the upcoming films or Disney+ originals. Since Iron Man had one at the end of Avengers: Endgame, it would only be appropriate that one of the oldest Avengers gets it too. But even if Steve Rogers is alive, it’s obvious that his story is more or less over, due to him being older as well as having passed on the shield to Sam. However, that doesn’t mean that Evans couldn’t return in a different capacity.

Where Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers Could Appear Besides Captain America 4

When you are dealing with a shared universe that is based on comic books, there is always more than one way for an actor to play a certain superhero or supervillain. The story of the MCU’s main Steve Rogers is over, whether he is alive or not, as Avengers: Endgame was his conclusion as Captain America. Undoing his death or making Steve young again would severely hurt the finality of Avengers: Endgame. The franchise needs to be done with this Captain America, as he has served his part after three full phases. However, the MCU is about to get into the Multiverse, where they can begin to explore alternative versions of these characters.

With WandaVision and films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: No Way Home, things are already in motion for MCU to look at alternative realities. It would be more intriguing to see Evans come back and play a completely different Steve, maybe one who never became Captain America on his Earth. If they really wanted to, they could also always bring Evans back as Human Torch, another Marvel hero that he used to play in the original Fantastic Four franchise, before joining the MCU. If Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths could pull off Brandon Routh as both Superman and The Atom, why couldn’t the MCU do it with Evans?

Whenever Avengers 5 happens, another character Evans could play is the Secret Empire version of Captain America, where he was revealed to be a Hydra sleeper agent in a now-erased timeline. An Avengers film is probably the best next thing to have Evans in, especially if some of Steve’s former allies have to go up against an evil doppelganger that looks like the first Captain America but is on Hydra’s side. Even if Kevin Feige and Chris Evans are denying it, it definitely doesn’t seem like Steve Rogers’ time in the MCU is over, whether it’s in Captain America 4 or a different project altogether.
