What Happened To Maxwell Lord After Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984’s main villain Maxwell Lord reunites with his young son, Alistair, at the end of the film, but what happens to him after? The movie doesn’t offer an explanation or hints at his true fate — only that he is able to renounce his wish to be the Dreamstone and return home to his child. Seeing as Maxwell breeds global discontent (and almost war), there are a few possibilities as to what could happen to him after the events of the movie.

As much as Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) wants to impress Alistair, he is not the best role model. Maxwell is a megalomaniac sham of an oil tycoon. He puts on a front of extreme wealth, confidence, and charm, even though his business is failing and he struggles to keep up the façade. By becoming the physical embodiment of the Dreamstone, he is able to grant wishes and feed off the life essence of wish-makers. He becomes so obsessed with his own success that he forgets all about Alistair. It isn’t until Diana uses her Lasso of Truth on Maxwell that he is forced to confront the memories of his abusive father and lonely childhood and remember what really matters.

Wonder Woman 1984 doesn’t show Maxwell Lord getting apprehended by police or dying at the hands of Diana. Instead, he is shown reconciling with his son in the aftermath of his time as the Dreamstone. Maxwell is clearly remorseful for his actions and frantic when he can’t find Alistair at first. He vows to earn Alistair’s love and forgiveness someday, but Alistair says he loves him already. It is possible and makes sense that after this scene in Wonder Woman 1984, Maxwell Lord just wants to protect the only valuable thing he has left, goes into hiding, and works on a quiet, honest living with his child. Surely he is a wanted man after all the chaos he created around the world. The manifestations of wishes may have disappeared, but the people have not forgotten what he’s done.

There is another possibility that Maxwell does do the right thing and turns himself into the police, though he would likely face numerous charges from international courts and almost certainly be sentenced to a lifetime in prison. The whole reason Maxwell relinquishes his control is because of Alistair, so it is unlikely that he would be able to properly parent or make his son proud from behind bars. Hiding out somewhere secluded sounds like a much more viable option. Luckily for him, the movie does not follow the comic book arc where Maxwell Lord uses his powers to control Superman and Diana, left without any other option, disposes of him on live television.

It’s unclear whether Maxwell will make more appearances in the DCEU. His character arc is pretty much finalized in Wonder Woman 1984, and he doesn’t hold power or influence any longer. For him to return and wreak havoc on the Justice League might seem a little far-fetched, since he has seen the error of his ways and is seemingly completely devoted to Alistair now.
