What Ray Liotta Has Done Since Goodfellas

Ray Liotta is best-remembered for playing the lead role in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, but what has he done since the movie came out a decade ago? Scorsese is one of the most respected filmmakers in the industry, and while he has explored different genres throughout his career, he’s still best-known for his gangster movies – and the one often regarded as his best is Goodfellas, released in 1990.

Goodfellas is based on the book Wiseguy, by Nicholas Pileggi, and chronicles the life of mob associate Henry Hill (Liotta), from his days as a teenager fascinated by the mafia presence in his Brooklyn neighborhood, to his involvement with the crime family of Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino) and his decision to become an FBI informant and enter the witness protection program. Goodfellas was a big critical and commercial hit and was nominated for a number of Awards, taking the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor thanks to Joe Pesci’s performance as Tommy DeVito. Though he was already a well-known name thanks to his role in the 1986 movie Something Wild, Goodfellas was a big push for Ray Liotta’s career, who appeared in a variety of projects after playing Henry Hill on the big screen.

Liotta’s first movie after Goodfellas was the comedy-drama Article 99, where he starred alongside Kiefer Sutherland, and was a critical and commercial failure, but his next project, the psychological thriller Unlawful Entry, was better received. Liotta then starred in the action movie No Escape, based on the 1987 novel The Penal Colony by Richard Herley, the comedy-drama Corrina, Corrina, and Walt Disney’s Operation Dumbo Drop, where he played T.C. Doyle. Liotta has appeared in a number of action movies ever since, such as Turbulence and The Last Shot, thrillers like Hannibal, Narc, John Q, and Identity, and had some fun cameo appearances in Muppets from Space, Wanderlust, and Muppets Most Wanted. Other notable titles in Liotta’s post-Goodfellas career are Killing Them Softly, The Place Beyond the Pines, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Kill the Messenger, Marriage Story, and Hubie Halloween.

Liotta has kept himself very busy and has not only appeared in and produced various movies, but he has also taken part in a number of TV projects. Right after Goodfellas, Liotta appeared in the TV movies Women & Men 2: In Love There Are No Rules, The Rat Pack (where he played Frank Sinatra), Point of Origin, and Abominable Christmas, where he voiced Abominable Dad. He also had small roles in series like ER, Hanna Montana Forever (as Principal Luger), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (as Paulie Fiuccillo), and Young Sheldon, and has lent his voice to characters in SpongeBob SquarePants, Phineas and Ferb (where he played himself), and The Simpsons, voicing Morty Szyslak, Moe’s father. Of course, Liotta has also had lead roles in TV shows, such as the crime drama Shades of Blue, which aired from 2016 to 2018.

In addition to all that, Liotta voiced Tommy Vercetti in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Billy Handsome in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, specifically in the Mob of the Dead zombies map, appeared in the 2004 Broadway play Match, and the music videos “Lovers on the Sun” (David Guetta), and “Bloodstream” (Ed Sheeran). Although he hasn’t had another role as big as Henry Hill in Goodfellas, Ray Liotta continues to be active in the entertainment business and is to be seen what other genres and areas of filmmaking and TV production he will explore next.
