What Ultra Shiny Pokémon Are (& Where To Find Them)

Shiny hunting has been a staple in Pokémon games since its introduction to the series, and Pokémon Sword and Shield introduced new ways for players to hunt these rare, alternately-colored Pokémon. However, that wasn’t the only change that developers sneaked in when setting up Shiny encounters for the 8th Generation of the series. Shiny hunting players are used to the standard blast of stars and sparkles that make up a Shiny Pokémon’s battle animation, but Sword and Shield introduced a second type of Shiny, and it can be more rare to find at full odds than normal Shiny Pokémon.

Shiny Pokémon have remained largely the same since Generation 3, when Shininess was altered to be determined by a player’s trainer ID number and a Pokémon’s personality value. The Shiny animation in each generation has changed slightly as graphics have improved, but usually involves a blast of star-shaped sparkles, as well as a chiming sound when they are tossed into battle. However, Sword and Shield introduced a new Shiny type players have dubbed the “Ultra Shiny” or “Square Shiny.” These Pokémon are colored like regular Shiny Pokémon, but have a different Shiny animation when entering battle, and different requirements to appear during an encounter.

Shiny Pokémon have a 1 in 16 chance of being an Ultra Shiny when encountered in the wild. The animation for an Ultra Shiny Pokémon includes a lens flare-like burst of light, followed by a sprinkle of square-shaped sparkles. It can happen so quickly that some players may not realize that the Pokémon is an Ultra Shiny until they have caught it and are using it in battle. Because of this, Shiny Hunters may want to go through their already-caught Pokémon and see if they have any Ultra Shiny treasures hidden among the Pokéballs.

Pokémon Sword & Shield’s Ultra Shiny Pokémon

According to @Kaphotics on Twitter, there are some Shiny Pokémon in Sword and Shield that will always be Ultra Shiny. Max Raid Shiny Pokémon will always have this alternate animation, as well as Shiny Pokémon received from special events. Players will also have a higher chance of receiving an Ultra Shiny Pokémon if they are trading from past games, or chaining for Shiny Pokémon encounters in Sword and Shield. This is because the method for determining the animation type is forced to be Ultra Shiny when a Pokémon is predetermined to be Shiny, rather than a random, full-odds encounter.

Shiny Pokémon rarity has been split! Same 1:4096 odds to obtain a shiny, but there are two types of shiny. 15/16 show stars, 1/16 show squares. Square rarity is 1 in 65536! Basically, if your Trainer ID cleanly matches the PID (xor), it will be squares rather than stars. pic.twitter.com/Lerr23LtB7

Having two different types of Shiny Pokémon to hunt gives players looking for the rare, different-colored versions of their favorite species another variant. While having an Ultra Shiny doesn’t boost stats, or have any other bonuses besides the alternate animation, having two Shiny Pokémon of the same species entering battle with different animations is still worth collecting. Encountering an Ultra Shiny at full odds in the wild can be a real treat for Pokémon Sword and Shield players as they enjoy their adventure through the Galar region.
