What We Do In The Shadows Why Colin Falls In Love With The Siren (For Real)

Here’s why What We Do In The Shadows’ Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) falls in love with Sheila, the siren, for real. Colin is the show’s resident energy vampire, meaning he feeds by absorbing humans’ negative energy rather than drinking their blood. The life of a being who feeds on the displeasure of others can get lonely, but Colin has sought romance before in season 1, episode 3, “Werewolf Feud,” in which he briefly dates another energy vampire, Evie Russell (Vanessa Bayer), but the two ultimately part ways.

In What We Do In The Shadows season 3, episode 7, “The Siren,” Colin and Laszlo (Matt Berry) are lured to an island by some mysterious singing. On the island, they discover the siren named Sheila (Catherine Cohen), who Laszlo finds repulsive due to her half-bird appearance. Colin, however, seems intrigued, and when Laszlo abandons him on the island, Colin and Sheila start to bond by singing karaoke together. Colin insists that he has found true love despite Laszlo’s protestations that he’s merely under Sheila’s enchantment. Laszlo ends up forcibly removing Colin from the island, but by the end of the episode, it’s clear that the energy vampire is still not over his feelings for the siren.

Sheila does actually appear to be the perfect match for Colin in What We Do In The Shadows, so it’s likely that his professed love for her is genuine, and not just a side effect of her ability to enchant men whenever she sings. In addition to most people finding her irritating, a trait Colin is clearly attracted to, he wouldn’t have to compete with Sheila for sustenance like he did with Evie. The siren could also be a singular character for the show in that she seems to genuinely enjoy Colin Robinson’s company, a rarity for him. So their match is both mutually beneficial and emotional.

Colin’s relationship with Evie has already shown that he is attracted to beings who exasperate others. After competing for feeding rights to their shared office, he and Evie end up forming a symbiotic relationship in which they use their status as a couple to mutually feed, but this still involves an element of competition for resources. Sheila, however, has all the annoying qualities that fulfill Colin’s strongest energy vampire desires, but she feeds by actually eating her prey rather than draining their energy. This means that Colin could basically have his cake and eat it too, a being that helps him vex their victims so that he alone can feed on their frustration before she then devours their flesh.

Colin and Sheila also recognized a bond that goes beyond their symbiotic relationship. When the two are alone on the island, Colin confesses that nobody has ever enjoyed listening to him talk before. It’s a somewhat surprising statement from the energy vampire considering that Colin’s interest in other beings has mostly only revolved around harvesting their irritation in previous What We Do In The Shadows seasons. Hearing him profess a desire to be liked comes as a bit of a shock, but in an episode that’s largely about the deeper emotions of the vampires, it’s a fitting reveal that Colin could secretly want a more meaningful relationship.

This episode sets Sheila up as the perfect match for Colin Robinson, but it’s unclear if season 3 will continue to explore their connection. It could certainly fit into Colin’s season 3 story arc, which has shown him growing restless and feeling like even more like a misfit. Colin’s ongoing quest to discover the origins of energy vampires and has prioritized further development of his character and hinted at his internal feelings of not belonging. Regardless of if Sheila the siren returns in What We Do In The Shadows season 3, she will go down as the best hope Colin Robinson has for true love.
