Whats the Best Audio Software Audacity VS FL Studio VS GarageBand

Comparing perhaps the three most popular, free audio programs out there, GarageBand, FL Studio, and Audacity is tough because they’re all very different. Determining which one is the best is extremely situation and for multiple reasons. Some of them are only available on certain operating systems and some require external equipment, so there’s no one-size-fits-all takeaway.

All three programs offer amazing value for free. They can each be used as a satisfactory creative outlet for multiple types of audio creation. They’re used at every level, as professional podcasters, music producers, and film composers employ these programs in their daily lives. Each one is also remarkably welcoming for newcomers, hiding their depth behind relatively intuitive interfaces.

The problem with comparing them is that they serve different purposes. Audacity is an audio editing platform. GarageBand is a recording workstation. FL Studio is a music sequencer. There’s some overlap between what these programs do to an extent, but most people looking to create audio would have a specific need and, rather than compare the three of these, simply pick the one that services that need.

GarageBand and FL Studio Are Used to Create New Sound

GarageBand is a program for recording and arranging audio. It is primarily used to record real-world, physical instruments. Its users are typically musicians planning to connect their guitars, microphones, and other instruments to a computer to record themselves playing. After recording, GarageBand lets artists arrange and level that audio, with the end goal being to create a song, hence the “Band” in the title.

FL Studio is a sequencer. It comes with thousands of audio samples pre-installed. The idea is a user would arrange and alter these sounds to create music or sound effects. Lots of electronic music is created from FL Studio’s audio samples since the program does not require connecting any actual instruments (or knowing how to play one). It’s simply a giant collection of sounds for people to use as they see fit.

So a band looking to record live music would be best served by GarageBand. A sound engineer or electronic music producer looking for a library of instrumental samples would use FL Studio. It’s possible to do things like record samples in GarageBand, then import those samples into FL Studio for sequencing, but that’s not a typical use-case. Lastly, GarageBand is exclusive to Apple operating systems, while FL Studio is Windows only.

Audacity is Used to Edit Existing Sounds

Audacity (which is on Mac and Windows) is different from the aforementioned programs in that it is not used to create sounds, other than vocals. There’s a sound recording option but it sees most of its use for recording speech rather than live musical instruments. It doesn’t have pre-installed audio samples either. Audacity is intended for people who have sound files they’d like to edit into another creation. For example, a podcaster might load a file of each guest’s recorded speech, a music file, and maybe some sound effects from other programs into Audacity to edit, trim, and produce a podcast. That music and those sound effects could have perhaps been made in GarageBand or FL Studio, but most likely not in Audacity.

People who want to record themselves playing music would go with GarageBand. People who want to use pieces of pre-recorded sound to make them into music would use FL Studio. People who want to edit existing audio files, and maybe record a vocal track in addition, would use Audacity.
