Gilgamesh’s powers put him on par with the MCU’s Thanos, and he’s one of the superheroes appearing in Marvel’s Eternals movie. Directed by Chloe Zhao, Eternals introduces a dozen heroes and villains from the comic books; ten of these will be members of the movie’s titular team who represent a race of alien immortals, of which Gilgamesh is among the most powerful.

MCU Phase 4 is only in its first year and it’s already brought in a handful of new heroes through projects such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, WandaVision, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Eternals, on the other hand, will go a few steps further by throwing a whole new team into the mix, plus the Black Knight from Avengers comics. Though several of these characters are rather obscure, all have histories that go back to at least the 1980s. Most of them, including Gilgamesh, first burst onto the scene in Jack Kirby’s 1976-1977 comic book series and have been making recurring appearances ever since.

Like the characters created in Kirby’s comics, the MCU’s Eternals are a race of super-powered aliens who have been dwelling on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Created by “space gods” known as the Celestials, the Eternals are expected to come out of hiding in the upcoming Phase 4 movie to battle the Deviants, who have arisen as a consequence of Smart Hulk’s snap in Avengers: Endgame. This conflict allows the Eternals like Gilgamesh the opportunity to emerge from the shadows and assume a new heroic status. Based on his characterization from the comics and extensive backstory, his powerful presence could have serious consequences for the wider MCU.

Gilgamesh’s Origins In Marvel Comics Explained

In Marvel Comics, the Eternals remained hidden for so long because they promised the Celestials that they would never interfere in the affairs of humans. It was the will of the Eternals’ leader, Zuras, that all of them respect this important rule, but one of his children was a bit more difficult to control. The Eternal currently known as Gilgamesh traveled the Earth performing heroic deeds and unintentionally sparking a number of mythological legends. His actions were not well-received by Zuras and the Eternals, who felt that he betrayed the ways of his people to earn glory. As a result, Zuras banished him from the Eternals and ordered him to be confined within the limits of a small area in their secret city of Olympia. Adding insult to injury, Zuras declared that his name should never be spoken again, thus earning him the title of “The Forgotten One.” To this day, his real name remains a Marvel Comics mystery.

Thousands of years later, The Forgotten One was convinced by Sprite to come out of exile and help his people overcome a new threat. Despite opposition from some of his fellow Eternals who still held a grudge against him, he emerged as a key ally to the Eternals against the Deviants and helped save them from all destruction. Afterward, his banishment was finally lifted, allowing him to roam the Earth once more as both Gilgamesh and the pseudonym “Hero”. In the early 1990s, he shared adventures with characters like Captain America, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and Thor as a member of Steve Rogers’ new Avengers team.

Gilgamesh’s Powers In Marvel Comics Explained

All Eternals possess a wide range of abilities. Like Ikaris, Thena, Sersi, and all the rest, Gilgamesh can project beams of cosmic energy from his hands and eyes, fly, manipulate matter, read minds, and reconstitute himself if his body is ever destroyed. What makes Gilgamesh’s powers stand out from the other Eternals is his colossal strength. All Eternals are superhumanly strong, but having varying levels of power. Some are in the same strength class as Spider-Man, whereas others are much more powerful. Standing above all of them in this aspect is Gilgamesh, whose physical power is on par with Thor, Hulk, and Hercules. Gilgamesh’s powers by far make him the strongest of the Earth-based Eternals. With all the abilities he has at his disposal, there’s little doubt that Gilgamesh is capable of overpowering the vast majority of the superheroes that exist in the Marvel Universe.

How Powerful MCU’s Gilgamesh Is: How He Could Beat Thanos

Details revealed about Gilgamesh in the MCU have confirmed that he shares the comic character’s reputation as the strongest Eternal. But, it looks like the MCU has shrunk his powerset and those of the other Eternals in order to avoid them being too powerful. All indications point to most of the Eternals losing some of their redundant powers and retaining the ones that make them unique. In other words, Eternals may ditch Gilgamesh’s power of transmutation and his ability to project cosmic rays from his eyes and hands so that they’re associated only with Sersi and Ikaris, respectively. That being said, trailers for the movie show him generating cosmic energy around his arms, which means that super-strength may not be his only power.

Regardless, his physicality should still make him a match for the powerhouses of the MCU. In the comics, a blind Gilgamesh came extremely close to defeating Thor, and likely would have won their showdown if his sight wasn’t impaired at the time. Thor – who had already fought Hercules, Hulk, and Thanos at this point – declared Gilgamesh to be the most impressive foe he had ever faced. If Marvel accurately adapts Gilgamesh’s strength and fighting ability, there’s a good chance he’d join Scarlet Witch as one of the only characters who can beat the MCU’s Thanos single-handedly. Thanos does have a tremendous amount of strength, but it’s important to note that he needed the Power Stone to drive back Captain Marvel. He’d need more that than if he was pitted against The Forgotten One.

Don Lee Plays Gilgamesh In Eternals

After being around for more than 40 years, Jack Kirby’s classic Eternals character will be brought to life on the big screen by Don Lee. Known to South Korean audiences as Ma Dong-seok, the actor first made a name for himself with his award-winning performances in various Korean movies. Arguably his biggest role was in the critically-acclaimed zombie movie, Train to Busan. He also starred in The Outlaws, Ashfall, and Familyhood. Though he’s had a successful career dating back to the mid-2000s, Eternals will serve as his first-ever Hollywood film.

Gilgamesh’s MCU Future After Eternals: What’s Next?

Assuming Gilgamesh survives the fight to save the Earth from the Emergence in Eternals, Gilgamesh could go on to have a future that’s not at all unlike the one experienced in Marvel Comics. Typically, the Eternals kept to themselves, even after their secret was revealed to humanity. Gilgamesh was among the few Eternals who instead joined the Avengers. That move made sense for him, given his ties to humanity and his heroic tendencies. Don Lee’s character could have the potential to embark on the same path. If that happens, Gilgamesh could be the roster for The Avengers 5.
